Are Beyoncé & Lady Gaga Still Buddies'?

by Jaclyn Anglis

Remember when Beyoncé and Lady Gaga teamed up to sing about phones together in both 2009 and 2010 hits? It seemed like a match made in pop collaboration heaven. After all, the two pop stars are both singing and dancing powerhouses, not to mention pros at cultivating loyal fan bases — the Bey Hive and Little Monsters, respectively. Pop fans all over were immediately on board for Bey and Gaga, but they have not collaborated since then, and they no longer gush about each other constantly in interviews. Fans of both stars feeling nostalgic might be wondering what happened to Beyoncé and Lady Gaga's friendship.

To borrow a line from the duo's hit "Telephone," did they "stop callin'?" That's what some media reports might have you believe. Rumors started flying around back in 2011 that Beyoncé had it out for Gaga after she broke out of the giant egg at the Grammys before performing her single "Born This Way," and "insiders" said that Beyoncé found it "tacky." Similarly, other gossip sites reported that Gaga was on a "campaign" to "expose" Beyoncé — for what, was unspecified.

It probably did not help that they had not been featured in each other's hit songs since "Video Phone" and "Telephone." Also, it likely did not help that they were not going on and on about each other in interviews like before. For example, Gaga told MTV of Beyoncé in 2009, "She is a real, real woman." And in 2010, Beyoncé said on Tyra Banks' talk show of Gaga, "She’s just so smart and she’s becoming an icon in her own right." But hold the phone before you jump to conclusions here.

Bey and Gaga have hung out since their big hits, and they have shouted each other out in support. It just has not been quite so publicized, for whatever reason. But in any case, it seems like the rumors about them having a falling out or a feud were just that — rumors.

Most recently, Gaga and Bey reunited at Stevie Wonder: Songs in the Key of Life – An All-Star Grammy Salute in February of this year. They even posed for a photo together, alongside Jay Z. But this isn't the first time since their hit singles that they have caught up.

Beyoncé wished Gaga a happy birthday via social media in 2014, saying, "Happy birthday to the multi-talented, creative Lady Gaga. With love, from Honey B." The Honey B part was a reference, of course, to her character in the duo's "Telephone" video. She didn't forget!

And much like the rest of the Internet, Gaga was freaking out over Bey's surprise album release back in 2013, and made no qualms about hiding her fandom:

Oh, and even back in 2011, when this supposed "feud" was going on, Bey was quoted in Essence as saying, "I love Gaga. If she didn’t perform and she wasn’t a singer, just as a human being I love her to death."

Phew! We can all rest much easier knowing that somewhere in the universe, Gaga and Honey B are still on the run together from the police after causing a massive restaurant disaster in their "Telephone" video. Now the only question is, when is the sequel coming out?
