What Does The View Outside Your Home Mean To You?

by Eliza Castile

What does the view from your window look like? That's the question that inspired the minds behind "The View from Here," a photo series documenting houses, apartments, and living places around the world. Perhaps more importantly, it also showcases the people living within them. Using crowdsourcing websites like Fiverr and Upwork, the project asked photographers in 27 countries around the world to photograph the views outside their homes, both at night and in the morning. In addition to the images, there was one more request: "Tell us what you see and how it makes you feel."

Although photographers primarily work in images, the participants in "The View from Here" certainly have a way with words. One photographer living in a small village in Latvia describes their view as "very lush, it’s as if the plants want to make up for the lost time in winter and autumn." In contrast, a resident of Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, writes that the vibrant, busy cityscape is akin to having a "huge virtual reality screen and the scenery is changing just for me."

The result is a gorgeous collection of images showing how different life can be around the world, but also how similar we really are. But why am I writing about it? I'll let the photographers tell you themselves. Check out the full "The View from Here" series here.
