1D’s “Drag Me Down” Lyrics Are So Romantic

by Jaclyn Anglis

One Direction pulled a mini Beyoncé. This means, of course, that the boy band dropped a new single in the middle of the night to the total surprise and delight of their fans. And, if you're a Directioner who is a sucker for the band's ultra mushy songs, be prepared to swoon because One Direction's "Drag Me Down" lyrics are their most romantic yet.

You're forgiven if you thought this surprise single would have to do with Zayn Malik in some way. After all, this is the British group's first single since Malik's shocking exit from the band earlier this year. And on top of that, One Direction released this first single just one day after Malik announced that he had signed a new record deal with RCA and explained that making music on his own was why he left the band in the first place.

Though the timing is interesting, band member Niall Horan explained the release in a video on Twitter, saying, "We couldn't wait for you to hear our new single, 'Drag Me Down,' so we released it early." Fair enough! Also, judging by the lyrics, this song does not seem to have anything to do with Malik. Instead, they seem to be singing simply about a romantic relationship. And, as any Directioner knows, the guys are pretty good at that — even without Malik in tow. Check out some of the most swoon-worthy lyrics from "Drag Me Down" below.

1. I've got fire for a heart/ I'm not scared of the dark

These opening lyrics set the stage for a fearless love. The fire burns so bright that it can shine through any metaphorical "darkness" that gets in the couple's way.

2. I got a river for a soul and baby you're a boat

His love is now connected to his soul. How deep is that? Deeper than any river, that's for sure.

3. If I didn't have you there would be nothing left/ The shell of a man that could never be his best

So what he's saying here is that his love gives him life and makes him full. As a "shell" (without her), he would be empty. Whoa…

4. You taught me how to be someone, yeah

So her love has helped him become a better person, essentially, and change for the better.

5. All these lights that can't blind me

Possibly a reference to the flashing lights that often accompany fame. Or possibly other interferences trying to distract him from his love. Either way, it is safe to say they are not working.

6. With your love, nobody can drag me down

A line oft repeated in this song, this shows that even when the world is against him and his love, their togetherness is powerful enough to keep his spirits up. What's more romantic than "us against the world?" Nothing, really.
