Quip, The Uber-Like Service For Your Toothbrush

by Eliza Florendo

Think about it for a second: when's the last time you actually changed your toothbrush, and was it recently enough? Enter Quip, a NYC startup that mails you a new toothbrush every three months, cause let's face it, you definitely don't change your toothbrush often enough. If I can remember correctly, I haven't changed my electric toothbrush's head in over six months. Yikes.

"According to the American Dental Association, toothbrushes should be replaced every three to four months, but 80 percent of people in the United States ignore the suggestion," according to ELLE. Don't fret—we're pretty much all doing it wrong. So of course, you can run down to your local drugstore and grab the toothbrush your damn self, but what about those people that are so busy, that they forget this extra step? That's where Quip comes in.

Basically, you choose either a manual or electric toothbrush handle and get a new brush head and toothpaste every few months. Easy enough! You'll definitely consider this service after reading the following: "a recent study from Quinnipiac University in Connecticut, nearly 60 percent of toothbrushes are contaminated with fecal matter," according to ELLE. Let that sink in. Now, I'm no germaphobe, but I do prefer to replace things once they're meant to be replaced. And with something like teeth, that you know, you only get one set of, it's important to take care of them with the utmost care.

Where Quip differs is in their focus on the old-school advice of brush your teeth, every morning and evening, for two minutes. Just do it. No frills, no fancy tactics, just take care of your teeth the right way. To help you do so, Quip toothbrushes vibrate brush pulses when it's time to switch to brushing a different section of your mouth. Which, when the thinking is done for me, makes brushing my teeth pretty easy.

Next time you brush your teeth (hopefully at some point today), take a look at your good 'ole brush, and consider tossing it for a fresh pair, if it's been a while. And, if you don't have the time or effort to do so, check out Quip. While it seems pretty lazy to have a toothbrush delivered to you, it's actually pretty convenient, if you've been putting off heading to the pharmacy and picking up a new one. It'll save you a trip to CVS at the very least, and at the very most, will give you bright, healthy teeth for the rest of your life.
