How To Cure Rough Feet

by Stephanie Chon

It's never a pleasant experience to accidentally run your heels against your leg to find that your heel is cracked enough to scratch yourself. Ouch! With summer coming to a close, it's time to figure out how to cure rough feet, because sandal season wasn't exactly kind to them.

There are countless ways to combat cracked, dry feet. Some religiously moisturize their heels daily while others try soaking their feet for long periods of time in water and scrubbing it afterwards. Admittedly, I've tried various tips and tricks before and I've failed to see results, while my friends found success. That said, it's important to keep in mind that different methods work better on some rather than others, but some of the top, most effective ways to treat your feet are as follows: using a pumice stone, applying Vaseline instead of a lotion, and soaking your feet in a homemade solution rather than plain water.

Pumice stones help with chipping away at those calluses around the edges of your heels and perhaps even along the sides of your big toes. It helps to chip little by little every day until your heel has smoothed out to its normal state.

I like to keep mine in the shower so that I always remember to use it. I normally wait until towards the end of my shower to use my pumice stone because heat and water will naturally soften my calloused heels a bit, which makes it easier to scrub the stone on.

A five minute foot massage with Vaseline can seriously do wonders for your incredibly dried out heels. To really lock-in the hydrating effects, it's best to put on a pair of socks after you apply. Also, this way, you won't have to worry about getting Vaseline all over your house floors. The perfect time to apply Vaseline would be right after you shower and before you go to sleep. But even if you're not planning to take a shower, you can instead soak your feet into a hydrating solution and apply Vaseline afterwards.

If you're up for a DIY home remedy solution, then grab a bowl of warm water, add a teaspoon of baking soda, four drops of peppermint oil, and one tablespoon of olive oil. After you mix everything in the bowl, soak your feet in the solution for about five to 10 minutes. Your feet should be super hydrated by then unless your adorable summer sandals really did your feet incredibly wrong. In which case, applying Vaseline after the soak might be necessary for you.
