'GoT' gets the 'Sesame Street' Treatment

by Jennifer Still

When it comes to television, no two shows are at such drastically different ends of the spectrum than Game of Thrones and Sesame Street . The former is a gruesome and explicit series about war, power, and betrayal — at least in simple terms — and the latter is a legendary children's program that teaches skills like vocabulary, simple math skills, and love and kindness. You would never put the two together under any circumstances, but some clever soul has done exactly that, putting the Sesame Street theme song over a collection of intense scenes and outtakes from Game of Thrones. The result is both terrifying and amazing.

The combination of the cheery Sesame Street theme song, with lyrics about sunny days, clean air, friendly neighbors and the like, atop some rather gory scenes of death and despair — and yes, a few bloopers, as well — is genius, but also really kind of freaky. I don't think I've ever given much thought to how dark GoT can really be. We're so used to it now that I don't think it phases most of us when someone gets their head chopped off or shot with an arrow or whatever. But when you're hearing the voices of happy children singing in a chorus, it gets a bit crazy.

The moments of levity in the video with the outtakes from previous season of Game of Thrones, are also a fun reminder that Westeros isn't real and the doom and gloom that graces our screen on Sunday nights isn't actually real. They're just regular people with a rather difficult job of portraying some terribly depressing, messed up storylines. Perhaps when the cameras stop rolling, things really are sunny days and friendly neighbors?

I think it's safe to say, Game of Thrones and Sesame Street have no business coming together, and they should probably stay in their individual realms. However, for this brief moment in time, let's just enjoy this blessed union in all its glory before we go back to the way things are meant to be.
