The 8 Best Boots To Wear On Campus

It's common knowledge that one of the best things about fall weather is that you get to start wearing boots again. Sure, sandals and wedges and, yes, even flip-flops have been comfortable all summer, but let's be real: Your feet need a warm, cushioned break. Plus, boots just make more sense for going back to school — they're probably the best kinds of shoes to wear on campus.

The only problem? There are so many different kinds of boots out there that picking a few favorites to pack with you can be really tough. This is one instance where I would say it's OK to go a little overboard and bring one too many items. I mean, you don't need to be stockpiling riding boots, but you should have a few different options to choose from. Opt for versatile and classic options that can be dressed up or down — and most importantly, feel comfortable.

Other things to consider when picking out pairs: Weather appropriate boots that will get you to class without leaving you soaking wet or freezing cold, and boots with a little bit of a heel that will keep you feeling dressed up, but also relaxed. And since you're a college student, you also want something affordable. The eight kinds of boots below are the best ones to take on campus with you. Not a student? Don't feel left out. Every woman should have these staples!

1. Classic Riding Boots

Naturalizer Jennings Knee High Boot, $199, Nordstrom

You can't go wrong with a pair of riding boots in a basic color like brown or black. They go with everything from jeans to leggings to dresses. Riding boots can easily make a simple outfit (like leggings and a long tee) look a little bit more dressed up — and they're comfortable! I love these Naturalizer boots. They might be pricey, but they feel comfortable, look good, and last a long time.

2. Rain Boots

Novel Dot Rain Boots, $35, Target

Classes don't cancel when it rains, and even if you do have a car on campus, you probably have to do at least some walking around, so rain boots are essential. You can choose to spend $150 on Hunter Wellies if you want, but I think these much less expensive Target boots do the trick.

3. Flat Ankle Boots

UGG Australia Demi Ankle Boot, $200, Nordstrom

Like riding boots, flat ankle boots are a classic that can be worn with anything. These are great for early fall and spring, when it's a little too warm for knee-high boots, but you don't want to wear sandals or sneakers. They're crazy comfortable; you'll want to wear them everyday.

4. Over-The-Knee Boots

Franco Sarto Agatha Over-The-Knee Boots, $90, DSW

Over-the-knee boots are so popular in the winter, for good reason. They look a little more dressy than riding boots, and they make a big statement. If you're going to buy them, I highly suggest these Franco Sarto boots. They have a small wedge heel for height, but they're so comfy that you barely even notice it. I normally have a tough time with wide-calf boots, but these fit perfectly. They look great with dresses if you're going out.

5. Ankle Boots With A Small Heel

Janella Boots, $120, Aldo

Another wardrobe staple is a stacked heel ankle bootie. They're so versatile and once you find a pair you like, you'll want to wear them all the time. They can easily be dressed up or down. I love cuffing my jeans with them, or just wearing them with dresses.

6. Snow Boots

Bearpaw Isabella Snow Boot, $110, DSW

If you're going to school in a place where you're guaranteed snow, get yourself snow boots - you'll thank me later. Nothing is worse than having freezing cold snow seep through your shoes - except maybe slipping on ice and falling on your butt. Good snow shoes will keep you warm and keep you from falling in front of everyone.

7. Hiking Boots

The Nor'wester Boots in Tan, $58, Spool 72

I love a pair of cute hiking boots for fall, even if you have no intention of ever going hiking. They're great if you have a long day of classes and just want to feel comfortable and relaxed.

8. Combat Boots

Steve Madden Fame Combat Boots, $100, DSW

Want to add a bit of a tougher edge to your wardrobe? Get a pair of combat boots. You can go all out with Dr. Martins, opt for something with a little more bling, or keep it casual with a pair like these Steve Maddens. They're perfect with jeans and I also love how they contrast against a feminine dress.

Now grab your favorite pair of chunky socks and get to walkin'.
