Who Might Replace Jared Fogle?

Subway cut ties with Jared Fogle, the company's main spokesperson for the past 15 years, after the weight loss celebrity became involved in a child pornography scandal. On Wednesday, Fogle settled on a plea deal with prosecutors, through which he'll serve between five to 12 years in prison for possessing and distributing child pornography and having sex with minors. When Fogle's house was raided by the FBI last month, Subway announced in a statement that they "mutually agreed to suspend their relationship." And now that Fogle's expected to plead guilty to the child pornography charges, there's little hope of him returning to his former position with the sandwich company. Who might replace Fogle as Subway's spokesperson? There are a few notable possibilities.

Subway reaffirmed its decision to fire Fogle on Wednesday, tweeting: "Jared Fogle’s actions are inexcusable and do not represent our brand’s values. We had already ended our relationship with Jared." Fogle's Subway celebrity began in 2000, when his first commercial aired, and he's worked as a spokesperson and pitchman for the company ever since. His name had become so synonymous with Subway that he's often referred to as "the Subway guy," and the sandwich company didn't even feel the need to use his last name when it tweeted Tuesday: "We no longer have a relationship with Jared and have no further comment."

So who will be the next Jared? Here are three possible replacements for Fogle as the face of Subway.

Michael Phelps

Subway began partnering with well-known athletes in 2006, bringing Michael Phelps onboard in 2008 as a "Famous Fan." According to Forbes, Phelps quickly became one of the most prominent "Famous Fans," and has starred in dozens of commercials. Because Phelps announced last year that he's coming out of retirement to compete in the 2016 Summer Olympics, Subway won't be able to feature the athlete in ads for a short period of time before and during the games, due to Olympic rules. But Phelps could still be a valuable spokesperson.

Nastia Liukin

Retired Olympic gold medal gymnast Nastia Liukin has endorsed Subway for several years, appearing in commercials and being featured on the chain's website as another "Famous Fan." Since she's no longer competing, making her the face of Subway might be more feasible than doing it with Phelps.

Apolo Ohno

A retired speed skater with eight Olympic medals, Apolo Ohno's name is easily recognized, which makes him a excellent replacement for Fogle. He's endorsed and worked as a pitchman for Subway since 2011. Paul Bamundo, Subway’s director of sports marketing, told Sports Business Daily that "It just seemed like a really good fit for us on a number of fronts."
