This Back-To-School Ad Is A Real Twinner

by Kristie Rohwedder

There’s a line of cars patiently waiting their turn (and by “patiently waiting their turn” I definitely mean “honking and cursing in the name of the school supply gods”) to drive into the Office Depot parking lot by my apartment, so that can only mean one thing: the first day of school is on the horizon. But we aren’t here to discuss ballpoint pens or debate college-ruled versus wide-ruled paper. We’re here to discuss the music that is in a certain commercial for a certain telecommunication corporation’s school year deals. The song in the back-to-school AT&T ad is “Closer” by twin die-rock duo Tegan and Sara. (As a matter of fact, I am really proud of that super corny joke.)

“Closer” was the first single off of 2012’s Heartthrob, the Oscar-nominated band’s seventh studio album. This is not the first time this tune has popped up on the boob tube: “Closer” has been featured in the first season of animated series BoJack Horseman , was used in a TV spot for Express, was covered in an episode of Glee , and appears in Degrassi: The Next Generation episode “Viva Las Vegas: Part 1”.

Oh, AND! Tegan and Sara performed the song on an episode of 90210:

But wait, there's more! Here's the music video for “Closer”:
