2014 Golden Globes Nomination Surprises Include James Spader, 'Brooklyn Nine-Nine,' & More
Awards season is officially upon us! The nominations for the 2014 Golden Globes were announced this morning by a group of everyone's favorite actors and dream-BFFs: Olivia Wilde, Aziz Ansari, and Zoe Saldana. And, based on the list of nominees, the trio could've introduced some of the categories with a resounding "SURPRISE!"
Because this year's race was full of shocking nominees. Click on to see those we're pleasantly surprised to see recognized, and those whose nod is making us give an eyebrow raise.
Robin Wright, 'House of Cards'
The Netflix series and Kevin Spacey both received nods at the Emmy Awards earlier this year, but the Golden Globes’ love for Robin Wright’s Claire Underwood is more welcome than Spacey at the Emmys.
Taylor Schilling, 'Orange Is The New Black'
It’s a pleasant surprise to see another Netflix nod go to Schilling, who was nominated for Best Actress in a TV Drama. But would it have killed the Hollywood Foreign Press Association to nominate Orange Is the New Black, the series, too?
Tatiana Maslany, 'Orphan Black'
The fact that the actress plays several doppelgängers on Orphan Black, and plays them astoundingly well, makes her nomination seem obvious. Then again, she was snubbed by the Emmys. But can we all say it in unison: It’s about time!
'Brooklyn Nine-Nine'
Andy Samberg’s single-camera cop comedy hasn’t even finished its first season and it managed to get two Globes nods, including one for Best TV Series, Comedy or Musical. Then again, we love it, so who are we to judge the HFPA?

'Rush'
Well, this one came out of nowhere. Ron Howard’s biographical sports drama about a feud during the 1976 Formula One season starred Chris Hemsworth as a race car driver (swoon) and Olivia Wilde. The film got some serious critical acclaim during its run, so it’s a happy surprise to see that it wasn’t overlooked on account of the hefty award-driven films arriving in the next few weeks.
