Anthropologie's Latest Collab Is A FLOTUS Fave

by Renata Certo-Ware

Thanks to The Devil Wears Prada, we know that florals for spring is not exactly groundbreaking. But florals for fall definitely feels fresh, especially since it's the backbone of Peter Som's capsule collection at Anthropologie. The collection, part of Anthro's ongoing Made In Kind series, is a bouquet of cheery reds and meditative blues. A flowy, flowered maxi dress is a standout, as is the sweet little mini skirt that features an abstract, water-color print.

The Made In Kind program launched in 2012 and has already included some solid designers, like fellow Americans Thakoon, Tracy Reese, and Chris Benz and Aussie Karen Walker. Som's first Made In Kind collection hit stores for Summer 2013, and had fans of both brands thrilled for the chance to snag breezy, warm-weather pieces from one of the FLOTUS's go-to designers at a pretty friendly price point. It's great to see that this time around, he's still channeling the effortlessness of summer for autumn, a traditionally transitional season where dressing right for the weather — not-quite-hot, not-quite-cold — is often a challenge. Som has also collaborated with Kohls on a line, proving that when it comes to design, he's definitely a team player.

On Wednesday, Som tookover Anthropologies Instagram account, sharing snaps of the collection as well as BTS pics of sketching the collection and shopping for flowers, a habit he relishes and one that clearly influenced the line.

Som said that leading-lady style was also a big inspiration behind the line: "I was inspired by Film Noir femme fatales mixed with Wong Kar-Wai’s In the Mood for Love. I love the idea of cinematic and mysterious romance," he said in an interview on The New Potato. That is definitely clear in pieces like the silky jumpsuit he posted on his own Instagram page:

In fact, his Instagram activity offers a lot of insight on the inspo behind the collection.

1.) Carole Lombard

He could have been dropping hints a week before the collection launched when he posted this stunning black and white shot of Carole Lombard by George Hurrell as a clue.

2.) As Seen On TV...

Som seems to have referenced this orchid-print dress from his Resort 2012 collection, previously worn by Leighton Meester on Gossip Girl.

3.) #TBT

His AnthroxPeterSom collection definitely seems to nod to the FW2014 collection from his own label in this #TBT posted earlier this summer.

Head over to Anthropologie to snag some femme fatale style for yourself.
