Bread Was Recalled For Having Glass In It

by April Siese

A broken light bulb is to blame for a voluntary recall of as many as 14 different types of breads in 11 different states originating from Bimbo Bakeries USA, creator of Sara Lee bread, among others. The company made the announcement on Wednesday, following reports from three different customers that small traces of glass had been discovered on the surface of its store-bought loaves. As of this writing, no injuries have been reported. The company is offering full refunds for those who return their bread to the store they purchased it at. Curious as to which products are affected? Here's how to tell if you bought Bimbo Bakeries' bread that was recalled due to glass.

Six different brands that fall under the Bimbo Bakeries USA name have been included in the voluntary recall: Sara Lee, Nature's Harvest, L'Oven Fresh, and grocery store–specific brands like Kroger and Great Value. A majority of the breads that are currently being recalled are wheat and multigrain loaves. In total, 11 states have been effected by the voluntary recall, a majority of them in the South. Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Mississippi, Ohio, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, West Virginia, and Virginia are all listed on the recalled product list.

Despite differing branding, all 14 breads bear the same bakery code number — 1658 — and the "best by" dates from each product range from August 31 to September 1.

The items in question are currently being removed from store shelves. Customers who have any additional questions about the recall can call a 24-hour hotline set up by Bimbo Bakeries USA at 1-800-984-0989.

Prior to the bread recall announcement, a voluntary food recall had been issued earlier that day for General Mills' Cascadian Farm Cut Green Beans due to listeria being discovered in a 10-ounce bag of the frozen vegetables.

This is Bimbo Bakeries' second recall in three years. The last one occurred in 2013 and involved a facility's faulty screen potentially putting products at risk of having strands of wire in them. The facility was not directly associated with Bimbo Bakeries and was merely a third-party company. That time, the recall was incredibly far-reaching and spanned all 50 states. Bimbo Bakeries USA is based out of Horsham, Pennsylvania, and currently employs 22,000 people across the country.
