Miley Knows How To Open A Show

by Rachel Simon

Did anyone really think Miley Cyrus could host a show and not make an absolutely ridiculous entrance? Of course not — and that's why we all know that making her host of the 2015 VMAs was pretty much the best idea ever. Just as you'd expect, Miley Cyrus' 2015 VMA monologue and sketch were total must-sees, filled with hilarious one-liners, celebrity shout-outs, and of course, that tongue. She may have toned down a bit since her most infamous performance at the awards show two years ago (you remember, right? Robin Thicke, "Blurred Lines," a foam finger...), but there's no question about it, no Cyrus is set on making her appearance at the VMAs just as memorable as it was two years ago.

It's not like she didn't warn us — in the weeks leading up to the show, Cyrus said that the VMAs would be a "party," full of energy that she felt was missing from last year's show. She told The New York Times that Seth Rogen and his team helped write her lines — she explained that the show would consist of more skits than jokes — and that she'd be entering the stage from an art piece made by Jen Stark. In other words: it'd be her Instagram come to life.

And that all started with her entrance. After a performance by Nicki Minaj, Cyrus took the stage to begin the show, and oh, did she get things started. She came in on a slide, dressed in a bodysuit and flowered hairpiece, and after getting settled, got started on her monologue. She first acknowledged that the show hadn't had a host in two years, "a tradition they'll probably immediately return to after tonight's show," she joked. Then, after explaining that she's "done literally everything on the VMA stage" and that the reason she was chosen as host was probably so she wouldn't perform, she got into the meat of her monologue — a sketch, called "Miley's Instagram Think Tank."

Joking that she had taken the year off from music to focus on her "true love — Instagram," Cyrus let viewers into the (fake) behind-the-scenes world of her photo creation, a universe in which comedians Andy Samberg and Ike Barinholtz okayed all her posts. The duo explained to Cyrus that without them, her Instagrams would be boring and unmemorable, but with them, they'd be the stuff of legends (that sexy corn post? All their doing).

It was a funny skit, and just risque enough to meet Miley-As-VMAs-Host standards. But of course, that wasn't the end of Cyrus' on-stage escapades; shortly after the skit, she preceded to take a giant selfie with audience members, in which each participant shouted "marijuana!" at the top of their lungs. In other words, as Cyrus herself said: "my most normal Instagram post ever."

Leave it to Cyrus to just keep a show PG-13 (no wonder MTV aired the VMAs on a delay). Clearly, she knows how to throw a party — especially if that party consist of millions of eager view dying to see what kind of crazy thing she'll do next.
