Gone are the days of the giant Grammys hat and the ubiquitous smash hit song "Happy." Pharrell Williams took his positivity to a level at the 2015 MTV Video Music Awards on Sunday night. During the MTV VMAs, Pharrell performed "Freedom" and it was pure fireworks — literally. Like, actual fireworks erupted from the downtown Los Angeles outdoor stage for the finale of the song.
Pharrell took to the outdoor stage after Kanye West accepted his Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award, and totally rocked everyone's world by announcing that he will run for president in 2020. It's hard to top a speech like that, but Williams went for it. He sang his hit tune among those fireworks and cheerleaders with the letter "F" on their uniforms. It was the best time in the VMA ceremony for a patriotic tune about freedom.
It's been a busy summer for the singer, music producer, and coach of The Voice. Pharrell debuted "Freedom" as part of Apple Music's launch earlier this summer and gave a preview of the song to the crowd at the Glastonbury Festival in the U.K. He released the song "Finna Get Loose" with Puff Daddy (not Diddy), performed a set at Japan's Summer Sonic music festival, and shared the stage with Drake at OVO Fest in Toronto. Earlier this year, Pharrell also hinted to Ryan Seacrest that he may have met with Adele regarding her new album due out in November. It'll be the Grammy-winning British singer's first record since her smash hit 21. "I just think she is a masterful writer, if you listen to her album, it lives and breathes," Pharrell told Seacrest.
Sounds like he's had quite the productive summer, and performing at the VMAs is certainly a big way to mark an end the season.
