Is Miley Cyrus The New Selfie Queen?

by Kadeen Griffiths

Whenever Miley Cyrus basically does anything ever, you can be assured that people are going to be talking about it. Sometimes, it's through no fault of her own; sometimes, she's actively trying to get our attention — usually on Instagram. So it comes as no surprise that Miley Cyrus took a selfie at the 2015 VMAs, and, in fact, that she took us inside her process when it comes to producing those wild and crazy photos that we all love so much. However, the real question is whether or not Cyrus' selfie can beat Ellen DeGeneres' 2014 Oscars selfie. That seemed to be the pop star's goal, but I'm doubtful that she actually managed to achieve it.

Cyrus' picture had a little bit of everything. She had the "Skurfs," who are apparently knock-off Smurfs, along with Rita Ora and Bollywood dancers who were reading... about dancing. There was also indie Popes ("side Popes," if you will) and Frankenstein and a spaghetti pool. In the midst of it all was Cyrus, who was supposed to be eating a sandwich but couldn't quite fit that into the photo while she was so busy trying to balance the selfie stick. The result was one heck of an epic selfie that's going to be really, really hard for other people to top.

...Except for Ellen DeGeneres, of course, who decided to gather everyone together to take a giant selfie at the Oscars that broke the record for the most retweets and has since been estimated to be worth about $1 billion. Much like when Beyoncé dropped a surprise album that broke iTunes, there's just something to be said about the novelty about being the first person to achieve something. Cyrus might have tried to give us a brand new iconic selfie for our generation, but it's unlikely this photo will actually succeed.

However, I doubt that Cyrus will be too upset about that, as the goal here was parody, homage, and having a lot of fun — all of which she achieved with style. And, hey, DeGeneres might be planning to be the first to retweet this selfie, or at least print it out and hang it up alongside hers at home. You never know.
