Remember that scene in the movie version of A Walk To Remember when Mandy Moore is holding her late mother’s journals, and mentions that her mother used them to write down great lines from literature, and all sorts of other quotes she’d loved and wanted to remember? OK, sure, so it wasn’t the most riveting scene in the film, I’ll admit, but it’s the one that has stuck with me the longest. My middle-school-aged, sleepover party animal self thought that idea was kind of brilliant, and since then I always read with a pen and a journal by my side. Over the years, I've filled hundreds of pages of these notebooks, with row after row of quotes from books that I've fallen in love with, and simply needed to pen across paper of my own.

But, brutal honesty here: All book quotes are not created equal. Some of literatures great one-liners stick with you for as you seem to need them, while others inform your life long after you’ve turned the last page and the book has grown a little dusty on your shelf. Then there are the book quotes so memorable that they become cultural touchstones. (We all know a rose by any other name does not, decidedly, smell as sweet, after all.) These are the lines from literature that become iconic.
