'Misunderstood' Phone Addicts: Secret Filmmakers?

by Alicia Lutes

Unpopular opinion alert: you're all reading Apple's 'Misunderstood' holiday commercial wrong. Sure, the sweet little ode to holiday cheer in these modern times might appear to you, at first glance, as a wonderful play on the jaded perceptions we folk-over-25 have regarding the state of kids today. It may look like the world's sweetest and most tear-inducing present for grandmas and parents ever made, realigning the idea that phone-obsession and overuse simply comes from a place of caring and feeling so much, but it's all a ruse.

Because what this really is a big ole scheme to give your friends and loved ones a free pass for affixing their phones to their faces for the entirety of your holidays at home in the name of "capturing the everyday magic for video compilation... later."

So just know right now that, should you head home for your family's winter festivities, and find all of your cousins, siblings, and even your Facebook-obsessed Aunt Carol on their phones, purporting to be some new cinema verite savant, capturing tiny miracles and moments through the lens of their sweet, sweet new iPhone ("Oh my god and look at my new case, isn't it so cool? Oh look, a cat video!")... just know that it's all a lie. An excuse enabled by the emotionally saccharine arms of Apple, a major corporation hoping you'll stuff an iPad mini in someone's stocking next week. The gifts that keeps on giving!

Now if you'll excuse me I have to go record a video of my roommate's cat eating a hair tie because... memories.
