JGL's 'Mindy Project' Visit Will Be Very Brief

When word first got out that FOX had decided to drop The Mindy Project after its Season 3 finale, I was beyond devastated, but lately I'm starting to think it may have been a blessing in disguise. Now that The Mindy Project has been picked up by Hulu, this presents a rare opportunity for each character's storyline to evolve in new and exciting ways. (A fresh start, if you will.) And while Danny and Mindy's future together still remains a big question mark, there are a ton of other things to look forward to when the show makes its streaming debut — one of which involves the fact that Joseph Gordon-Levitt will guest star in The Mindy Project Season 4 premiere. And surprise, surprise, he looks just as swoon-worthy as ever.

According to Buzzfeed (and from what we've seen in the newly released teaser trailer), the actor will appear in a Sliding Doors-inspired scenario that will showcase Mindy in an alternate universe of sorts and given a glimpse at what her life would be like if she wasn't with Danny, but instead married to Gordon-Levitt's character, Matt. He is described as being "a suave reality show producer for Bravo," which is pretty much everything Mindy has ever wanted in a man. But before you start getting too attached to his character (I know, I know, it may already be too late for that), I feel inclined to warn you that his visit will be painstakingly brief. In fact, his IMDB page indicates Gordon-Levitt will only appear in one episode of The Mindy Project . (*insert temper-tantrum here*)

Granted, IMDB isn't always the most reliable form of information, which is why it's also important to note that Buzzfeed specifies that his story arc is for the premiere episode only. Nothing is mentioned about a multiple episode stint. Of course, nothing is ever set in stone. There have been several instances on various TV shows where a would-be guest star is so well liked among viewers that the writers decide to keep them around. (Just look at Spike from Buffy the Vampire Slayer, who Joss Whedon originally planned on killing off in Season 2.)

So yeah, things can change. However, Gordon-Levitt's particular case would make it extra tricky for him to return for an encore performance since his character only exists in an alternate fantasy land. I mean, I guess the show could make him appear in Mindy's real-life universe, but it would be a relatively difficult plot pill to swallow. But hey, if it means more JGL in our lives, I'm willing to push logic aside and look the other way. So even though the prospect looks bleak at best, when there's a will, there's a way.

Your move, writers.
