When Does 'So You Think You Can Dance' Return?

Can you believe that So You Think You Can Dance has been going on for 12 seasons? With the "Team Street versus Team Stage" finale just around the bend, it's time to start looking to the future. When will So You Think You Can Dance return? The series has not yet been renewed for Season 13 by Fox, but it's such a staple of the network that I don't think there's any cause for concern.

Let's take a look at the history. Season 12 was officially renewed in November 2014. So there's plenty of time for Fox to make a decision. Season 11 was announced during the Season 10 finale, so we could be looking at an announcement Monday night. Then again, before that Season 10 was announced in December 2012. There's no hard and fast trend here so just because we haven't heard anything about the fate of the show yet, it's not a big deal.

At the 2015 Creative Arts Emmys, which were announced over the weekend, So You Think You Can Dance took home a trophy for Outstanding Choreography. Travis Wall, who may be the show's best choreographer at this point, tied for the award with the Hough siblings and Tessandra Chavez of Dancing With The Stars. Wall joins fan favorite choreographers Tyce Diorio, Mia Michaels, as well as Napoleon and Tabitha Dumo.

While Fox has welcomed two new competition series to their lineup this summer — Bomb! and Bullseye, neither of those are performance-based. Basically what I'm say is that they need this show. I have a feeling that we'll hear from Fox in the next few months. As far as audition dates and when the hypothetical Season 13 will premiere, it's hard to say. So You Think You Can Dance has been a fall show, and most recently a summer show. Summer works well for them, so they'll probably stick to that.

Honestly, the thing I'm most looking forward to in Season 13 is more of Paula Abdul as a judge. This season, she has been so entertaining. Her criticism and is always constructive and on point, and a dancing competition seems to be much more her forté than singing ever was. It sometimes feels as if she's mentoring the dancers from the desk, and that's delightful. This can't be the end of So You Think You Can Dance, and I don't think it will be.
