Johnny Depp As A Technology God

by Alanna Bennett

God knows we've got our plates full right now with amazing movies out and absolutely everywhere, but Hollywood marches on. And so we've got the first teaser trailer for 2014's Transcendence . It's got to do with artificial intelligence and likely, how that's a terrible idea. Transcendence stars the likes of Johnny Depp, Morgan Freeman, Kate Mara, Paul Bettany, Rebecca Hall, and Cole Hauser, all or most of whom make up a group of scientists working to create a super-computer which, according to Depp's voice-over as Dr. Will Caster, "will quickly overcome the limits of biology," and whose analytical power will eventually become "greater than the collective intelligence of every person born in the history of the world."

If you're thinking that sounds like a guarantee of the robot apocalypse, you're not alone: some anti-technology extremists are trying their damnedest to stop him. And according to the film's synopsis, their efforts kinda-sorta backfire:

In their attempt to destroy Will, they inadvertently become the catalyst for him to succeed—to be a participant in his own transcendence. For his wife Evelyn (Hall) and best friend Max Waters (Bettany), both fellow researchers, the question is not if they can…but if they should. Their worst fears are realized as Will's thirst for knowledge evolves into a seemingly omnipresent quest for power, to what end is unknown. The only thing that is becoming terrifyingly clear is there may be no way to stop him.

So if you wanted to see Johnny Depp transcend to raging megalomania: This seems like the movie for you.
