The Most Questionable Celebrity Fashion Moments of 2013

There were looks that took our breath away, and then there were looks that had us shaking our head in complete bewilderment. But with the very bad fashion moments came some very valuable lessons: the sheer trend is not for everyone; your grandma's sofa is not fair game for the red carpet; showing off your derrière — however toned it may be — is not always a good thing; and just because you love '90s hip-hop does not mean you wear a East Coast-West Coast rap rivalry in dress form.

Here's to the best of the worst, the "OMG, WTF?!" outfits of 2013 — thank you, head-scratchingly-dressed celebrities, for reminding us inadvertently what it is to be a normal, sane person.

Miley Cyrus' Homage to Biggie and Tupac at the MTV European Music Awards

Miley, Miley, Miley. Where to start? Where to stop? This Biggie-Tupac “Stop the Violence” halter minidress and Tom Ford boots combo was the cherry on top of a very Miley-filled year of outlandish red-carpet and onstage ensembles. Need proof? There was this, this, this, and this, too.

And from behind, Miley Cyrus’ peace-making dress showed off a built-in G-string. How sweet.

Lena Dunham at the Emmys

I adore Lena Dunham, and I usually admire her willingness to try new things in the fashion department. But this floor-length floral Prada gown wouldn’t look flattering on anyone. Just look at that tablecloth-esque print! With her matching teal eyeshadow added into the mix, this look officially went off the well-dressed rails for good.

Anne Hathaway at the Oscars

Anne Hathaway’s pink Prada gown was ill-fitting (hello, dramatic darting turned pronounced “nipples”), kind of boring, and apparently, a bit controversial. The star reportedly pitched a fit when she found out her Les Misérables co-star, Amanda Seyfried, was wearing a gown similar to her first Valentino pick, so she last-minute swapped it for this Prada number. Not the greatest change up, to be honest.

Jaimie Alexander at the 'Thor' L.A. Premiere

Jaimie Alexander is a big fan of the sheer trend — and we’re all very aware of that fact. We also basically know what she looks like naked. Thanks to her not-so-subtle Azzaro Couture gown, there was little left to the imagination, very little.

To truly understand how ridiculous these sheer panels were, you need to see Jaimie Alexander’s Azzaro Couture gown from the back, too. Now you know.

Kim Kardashian at the Met Gala

When it comes to Kim Kardashian’s floral upholstery look — more formally known as a Givenchy gown — at the Met Gala, there are just no words. There are no more words to describe just how bad this was. Why is this gown gloved? Why did designer Riccardo Tisci steal his grandmother’s couch for the purpose of making this gown? Why did Kim Kardashian consent to wearing it? There’s little time left in the year, and not a lot of reason to wait for these answers.

Jennifer Lopez at the Grammys

There’s too much leg reveal, too much one-shoulder-ness, and too much top knot going on in Jennifer Lopez’s Anthony Vaccarello look to be considered sexy, chic, or whatever “hot” adjective she was presumably aiming for. Instead, this year’s Grammys look made me wish she had worn something similar to her infamous plunging, tissue-thin Versace gown.

Julianne Hough at the Emmys

With the memory of Julianne Hough’s Halloween gaffe still fresh, this unflattering off-the-shoulder leotard-meets-crystal-covered gown by Jenny Packham does nothing to endear her to fans and critics alike.

Erin Wasson at the MTV Video Music Awards

For Erin Wasson, this Alexandre Vauthier Couture “dress” is conservative. Remember when she wore this barely-there number to a Golden Globes after-party? Regardless of the past, Wasson is capable of much more than this weird, ruched, too-sheer look. #helpErinWassonputclothesonin2014

Katy Perry at the Grammys

Katy Perry’s Gucci gown wasn’t just unpleasant because of the sickening seafoam green hue.No, it really had everything to do with that distracting “boob window.” A little cleavage is fine, a daring V-cut front can work, but that? That is a keyhole travesty.

Lil' Kim at the MTV Video Music Awards

While Lil’ Kim didn’t go the nipple-revealing route, she certainly didn’t do herself any favors with this figure-hugging perforated leather body suit. Add in the black feather trimming, wide heavyweight champion belt, and yellow suede booties, and you’ve got a whole lot of fashion nonsense.

Elle Fanning at the Met Gala

This year’s Met Gala theme was “punk,” not “dress as a psychedelic Star Trek extra.Luckily for Elle Fanning, she’s young, charming, and usually spot-on with her fashion risks. This tie-dye Rodarte number — complete with technicolor eye makeup — was not a risk worth taking at all.

Ke$ha at the Billboard Music Awards

Ke$ha’s Givenchy LBD took thigh-high slit to the next level. This detail should technically be called a “cheek reveal,” right? Now, my next question is: how does one sit in this dress?
