A Lonely Island Emmy Performance Needs To Happen

by Tracy Dye

After another year of glorious television worthy of endless marathons, one of the entertainment industry's most highly anticipated celebrations is upon us. I'm speaking, of course, about the 67th Emmy Awards, which premieres Sept. 20 on Fox. This year, the franchise has selected comedian and Brooklyn Nine-Nine star, Andy Samberg, as host. The choice couldn't be more fitting, given Samberg's proven acumen as a host, entertainer, and awesome personal in general. While the Saturday Night Live veteran has enjoyed continual success in his career, the upward arc in his star status hasn't caused Samberg to veer his attention from work with his band, The Lonely Island, who might even perform at the Emmys.

Ever since Samberg and his bandmates, Jorma Taccone and Akiva Schaffer, rapped their way into my heart with "I'm On A Boat," I've been hooked on their guffaw-inducing rhymes and delectably outlandish music videos. The group's breakout popularity led them to awards show performances, a massive social media following, and even a movie deal with Judd Apatow.

One question remains: Will Lonely Island be performing tonight at the Emmys? Given that one of their members is hosting, it only seems prudent that they should. Lucky for you, I decided to take it upon myself to do some in-depth research (i.e., scrolling through a lot of internet searches and social media updates) in order to find any hints as to whether or not a Lonely Island performance will soon be bestowed upon us. Let's take a look at the evidence, shall we?

1. Lonely Island Retweeted An Article Listing Reasons They Should Perform

As far as Twitter decorum goes, you don't normally retweet things unless you support them, like, 1,000 percent — amiright?

2. Moreover, Samberg Exclusively Uses Lonely Island's Twitter Account

Even though Samberg has his own verified Twitter account, he exclusively uses Lonely Island's account to tweet any and everything. And, yes, the gang has been littering their feed with the best behind-the-scenes Emmys pics imaginable.

3. Samberg Hasn't Posted Anything Emmy-Related On His Official Instagram Account

That confection of cat stickers on Samberg's face is lovely, but it has nothing to do with the Emmys. The comedian is decidedly more frequent with his individual Instagram posts than on Twitter, but there is nary an Emmy photo in sight. Hmmm...

4. Lonely Island's Instagram Is Currently A Filtered Emmys Bonanza

The proof is in the pudding, and that pudding is called Valencia.

5. They Performed At The Emmys Previously

Lonely Island performed a medley of some of their biggest hits during the 2011 Emmys. With help from some famous faces, the performance was met with laughs and rousing applause. Clearly, the 2015 Emmys would be the perfect time to have a second go-round.

6. They Also Performed At The 2015 Academy Awards

Clearly, performing at awards shows is old hat for these guys.

7. They Have A "Top Secret Untitled Lonely Island Movie" In The Works

If there's one way to draw attention to upcoming projects, it's performing onstage during one of the most highly anticipated celebrations in the entertainment industry.

I rest my case.
