Mindy Kaling & Jemima Kirke Are On A Road Trip!

It's been a huge month for comic genius and all-around-awesome gal Mindy Kaling. Her new book Why Not Me? is getting rave reviews, her book tour stop in New York City included an appearance from the Tina Fey, and her sitcom The Mindy Project made its debut on Hulu. But when it comes to TV's biggest night, Mindy Kaling won't be at the 2015 Emmy Awards, because the actress and writer just posted a fun Instagram snap of her and Girls actress Jemima Kirke on the road. In the photo, Kaling and Kirke pose in front of "The Friendly Store" in Laramie, Wyoming. And according to Kaling's caption, it's only a pit stop, so what could be the final destination?

Update: Kaling surprised us all and ended up attending the Emmys after all!

Presumably, it's not the Emmys, where The Mindy Project is nominated for zero awards (most likely, it was Allison Williams' wedding — her Girls co-star Kirke was confirmed to be in attendance). But that didn't matter — Kaling attended last week's Creative Arts Emmy Awards ceremony in a stunning red gown by Mindy Project costume designer Salvador Perez. As for this weekend, it looks like she hit the road with Kirke, who plays the wild and unpredictable Jessa on Girls. And it seems like Kaling's having a blast, tweeting "I'm all about that Jemima Kirke life." Kaling's next book tour stop isn't until next Sunday in Los Angeles, so it seems like Kaling and Kirke are using that time for an epic lady road trip that redefines squad goals.

I have so many questions about this friendship: How did they meet? Is this a spontaneous road trip across America (and perhaps to Canada)? Are they leaving copies of Mindy's book in random places? Could this mean Kaling may make an appearance on Girls one day as Jessa's zany friend and Kirke as a new friend for Mindy on The Mindy Project? Are they going to pick up B.J. Novak along the way? The possibilities are endless.

But Kaling is missed at the Emmys — by TV fans, as well as by ceremony host Andy Samberg. He tweeted a photo of a cute doggie in a tux sitting in a seat marked for Mindy to Kaling. She responded by wishing him luck.

It would be better to have the real Mindy there herself, but hey, when the open road calls, it calls. I can't wait to see where it takes Kaling and Kirke next.
