The 2015 & 2000 Emmys Red Carpets Were Identical

by May Sofi

With New York Fashion Week already behind us, awards season is officially underway. Kicking off a long year of nothing but wow-worthy red carpet fashion is the 2015 Emmy Awards — aka the single wildcard of all the awards shows with a notoriously unpredictable red carpet.

Not quite as formal as The Oscars, but definitely less casual than the VMAs, television's biggest night is known for integrating black tie formalwear with fashion-forward looks that are a bit more relaxed. However, while many things about the Emmys have changed since the Friends cast dominated its stage back in the early 90s, some eminent trends have clearly come full circle and are beginning to be repeated.

Julianne Hough's gothic glam tulle gown was totally inspired by Halle Berry's 2000 Emmys look (I'm convinced), while Ariel Winter's strapless red dress is pretty much a spitting image of the one Debra Messing rocked 15 years ago.

Both the 2000 and the 2015 red carpets were chock full o' gorgeous trends that included everything from edgy fringe, to over-the-top embellishments, tulle, embroidery, and everything in between.

Let's take a look at seven trends that were prominent on the Emmys red carpet both 15 years ago and today.

1. Heavy Embellishments

Kerry's and Christina's all-around glitzy looks definitely channel Geena Davis circa the 2000 Emmys, but with a modern twist.

2. Tulle

Tulle was all the rage back in the 00s, and clearly the trend has made a resurgence.

3. Crimson Red

Did Ariel Winter literally borrow Debra Messing's dress from 15 years ago?

4. Gold Embroidery

It looks as though Laura made herself a nice little cape out of Patricia's 2000 Emmys dress.

5. Pants

OK, so this isn't exactly the same, but both looks prove that pants on the red carpet are definitely not off limits.

6. Fringe

It looks like fringe got a bit of a make-under for 2015.

7. The Naked Dress

So this is where the naked dress trend originated.
