Drake's New Mixtape Lyrics Are Confusing

by Kadeen Griffiths

I love a good Drake mixtape as much as the next girl. I mean, personally, I'd rather be listening to Views From The 6 rather than a collaborative effort between Drake and Future, but I would never turn up my nose to new Drake music. That's like turning up my nose to air. However, when listening to the tracks on What A Time To Be Alive , I couldn't help but get a little confused. Drake's verses were as amazing as they always are, and he certainly held his own against Future, but I had so many questions when listening to his raps that I had to listen to the mixtape again from the beginning when I was done just in case I'd missed something. And because it was just that good. But, seriously, there are a ton of What A Time To Be Alive lyrics that raise more questions than they actually answer.

Since the mixtape as a whole doesn't answer the question of when, exactly, Drake plans to release Views From The 6, then this shouldn't really come as a surprise. However, I've gathered a list of nine lyrics that deeply resonated with me until I realized that I had further questions after listening to them. I'm not saying that's a bad thing. Good music makes you think. All I'm saying is Drake should have included some What A Time To Be Alive footnotes to answer all my questions.

1. "The pen is working if you n****s need some ghost lines."

Song: “30 for 30 Freestyle”

Is this as blatant a Meek Mill diss as I think it is? Or does Drake have a lucrative career as a ghost writer for other rappers, hence why Meek Mill's accusations struck him as so ridiculous? Is the answer both?

2. "Kids’ll lose their lives, got me scared of losing mine, and, if I hold my tongue about it, I get crucified."

Song: “30 for 30 Freestyle”

Why is this the only reference to #BlackLivesMatter that Drake makes on the mixtape? Is he right that he's being dragged through the mud for not commenting on the movement?

3. "If you come here trying to take some, there’s a lot more where that came from."

Song: "I'm The Plug"

Is this another swipe at Meek Mill? Or does Drake have more enemies on the horizon that he's pre-threatening from now? Is there a secret Drake feud brewing that all of us have no idea about?

4. "Y’all shoulda seen this sh*t coming in May. We doin’ 300 records a day."

Song: "I'm The Plug"

WAIT, WHAT? Three hundred records a day? Are you serious, Drake? How many mixtapes are you planning to release exactly? How long is the track list for Views From The 6? How much Drake music should I brace myself for in the next year?!

5. "Just walked in with a girl that’s making triple what I’m making, what an entrance."

Song: "Digital Dash"

Which girl are you talking about here? Is it Serena Williams? Is it Rihanna? Is it Nicki Minaj? I need an answer to these questions immediately.

6. "Man, what a time to be alive. You and yours vs. me and mine."

Song: "Big Rings"

Are we talking again about rap feuds? Are we talking about sports? Are we talking about posses? Do rappers still say posse? And is this the "what a time to be alive" referred to by the title of the album?

7. "I need acknowledgement. If I got it, then tell me I got it then."

Song: "Scholarships"

Who is out there not acknowledging Drake? Seriously, who? He seems pretty acknowledged to me, but, if he doesn't know about it, then we are clearly doing something wrong.

8. "Two in the morning, my mind is on you. Four in the morning, it still hasn't moved."

Ian Gavan/Getty Images Entertainment/Getty Images

Song: "Change Locations"

Is this adorably romantic line about Serena Williams? Come to think of it, are any of these songs about Serena Williams? Can you write one about me instead?

9. "When the higher-ups have all come together as a collective with conspiracies to end my run and send me a message."

Kevin Winter/Getty Images Entertainment/Getty Images

Song: “30 for 30 Freestyle”

Again, wait, WHAT? What higher-ups are trying to end Drake's run? Should we get a petition started to Save Drake? And when is Views From The 6 coming out? Is this the cause of the delay?

These questions will probably never get an answer — at least until Drake drops another album, which could be sooner than we're all imagining. In the meantime, it's time to listen to What A Time To Be Alive again in the hopes of gleaning the answers to the questions that these lines have raised.
