Ahmed Quit School (He's Too Busy Winning At Life)

by Jenn Rose

Ahmed Mohamed, the 14-year-old Texas boy who was taken out of school in handcuffs last week for bringing a homemade clock to school, will not be returning to MacArthur High School. Following his three-day suspension — which gained him worldwide fame and even attention from the White House — Ahmed's father, Mohamed El-Hassan Mohamed, decided to withdraw Ahmed from the high school altogether. In fact, all of his five children have been pulled from Irving Independent School District schools. The BBC reports that Mohammed plans to homeschool them instead.

According to a statement from the Mohameds obtained by Bustle on Wednesday, the family has also retained the services of Dallas attorneys Thomas Bowers and Reggie London. The firm will not only be addressing the traumatic civil rights violations Ahmed allegedly endured, but will also look into getting that clock back from the Irving Police Department and returning it to its rightful owner.

"I built a clock to impress my teacher but when I showed it to her, she thought it was a threat to her," Ahmed told reporters Wednesday. "It was really sad that she took the wrong impression of it." In a later interview, he described his arrest: "They arrested me and they told me that I committed the crime of a hoax bomb, a fake bomb."

When Ahmed's father went to the police station, however, he was given a different story. "I asked if I could talk to or speak to my son and they told me, 'No, not right now' because they were taking his fingerprints and asking him questions," Mohamed said. "I asked if I could see the thing they were calling a bomb. The police never let me even see it but I knew what my son brought to school. It was an alarm clock that he made. He wakes up with it most mornings." Though Bustle reached out for comment Thursday, a representative for the Irving Police Department has yet to respond.

I suspect Ahmed has better things to deal with than school and lawyers at the moment, though. Let's just consider for a moment the laundry list of offers he received after becoming Internet famous last week, shall we?

But first, he's got to go chill with some United Nations dignitaries and maybe stop by Mecca, if there's time. (Sorry, MacArthur High. Ahmed just doesn't have time for your nonsense anymore.)
