What Is 1D's New Song About?

by Caitlyn Callegari

You know what I do when I get wind of a One Direction song release? I play it on loop and pour over the lyrics, obviously. Why? Because I am a fan and an over-thinker and thus I need to know the meaning behind the haunting melody that I will likely ruin for everyone around me by singing over and over again. So, what is One Direction's new song "Infinity" about? Well, like anything, it's open to interpretation. But I think there is (or, will be once everyone gets the chance to hear it) a generally accepted answer to that question.

First things first, the boys didn't write it. "Infinity" was written by John Ryan, Jamie Scott, and Julian Bunetta, who also penned 1D hit "Story of My Life," so there probably isn't some secret, hidden, or super personal meaning behind this particular jam. Like, I don't know, Harry Styles signaling for Taylor Swift to come back to him. But that doesn't mean it isn't still heartfelt and that the boys didn't do their darndest to deliver an emotionally satisfying ballad. 'Cause they sure did!

This song seems to be about general, relatable, romantic-type woes. The whole idea behind the song title itself is repeated in the chorus:

How many nights have you wished someone would stay?Lay awake only hoping they're OKI never counted all of mineIf I tried, I know it would feel like infinity

What it means is that this particular type of longing and subsequent disappointment is immeasurable, infinite, just like, as the guys put it, "the nights it'd take to count the stars."
