Cracker Barrel Changed Its Mind... Already

by Emma Goddard

Phil Robertson and his Duck Dynasty supporters might actually be ruling the world. Just two days ago, Cracker Barrel pulled what they said could possibly be “offensive” Duck Dynasty merchandise from its stores. Now, all within the same weekend, the restaurant chain has already decided to take back their actions. The restaurant took to their Facebook page stating, “You told us we made a mistake. And, you weren’t shy about it. You flat out told us we were wrong.” The new decision was made in response to fans of the show protesting what the restaurant did. Feeling a bit fickle, eh, Cracker Barrel?

Earlier I wondered whether or not Cracker Barrel’s initial choice to remove certain Duck Dynasty items would create a chain reaction from other businesses, but I guess I was wrong. Instead, Robertson and his band of followers have made it a point that if he’s going to be kicked off A&E then they’re going to make a huge statement and come out of this stronger than ever. Yet with what seems like a surge of approval and fans taking the side of Robertson and his family, there are still those who — though much quieter about it — disapprove of Robertson’s comments comparing homosexuality to bestiality.

Even Charlie Sheen made it a point to post his views about Robertson on social media, tweeting “hey Mallard brained Phil Robertso! You have offended and hurt so many dear friends of mine who DO NOT have the voice or the outreach that I do.” So really, who is right in this situation, if anyone? What this entire controversy is actually revealing is how much of an impact TV shows and complete strangers have on our lives. Relax, everyone. The world has not ended.

Cracker Barrel’s full post:

Dear Cracker Barrel Customer:

When we made the decision to remove and evaluate certain Duck Dynasty items, we offended many of our loyal customers. Our intent was to avoid offending, but that’s just what we’ve done.

You told us we made a mistake. And, you weren’t shy about it. You wrote, you called and you took to social media to express your thoughts and feelings. You flat out told us we were wrong.

We listened.

Today, we are putting all our Duck Dynasty products back in our stores.

And, we apologize for offending you.

We respect all individuals right to express their beliefs. We certainly did not mean to have anyone think different. We sincerely hope you will continue to be part of our Cracker Barrel family.
