The Secret To This Topshop Beauty Look Is...

by Madison Fraser

Smudged makeup often indicates that you've been out just a tad too late drinking and dancing, but makeup artist Hannah Murray made it look inadvertently glamorous for Topshop Unique's S/S16 show at London Fashion Week. Backstage at, Murray let everyone know the secret trick for recreating such a look: using Vaseline to gloss a smoky eye.

Murray created the look using a smudged, black eyeliner with glossy lids and a punchy, matte red lip. While everything looks a bit messy, it was all intentional. Instead of using makeup brushes, Murray and her team applied everything solely with their fingers to create an undone look on each model. “It’s Princess Margaret meets Courtney Love, and they’re at a really debauched garden party," Murray told The New York Times when describing the inspiration for the look. “This girl cares, but not too much."

Indeed, the wet lids certainly look a bit sweaty, and a feathering lipstick isn't traditionally desired when it comes to makeup – but once you see everything together, you know it works. Paired with Topshop's edgy, It-Girl inspired clothing, it looks effortlessly cool (and not like that weird hangover trend that's all the rave in Asia). Considering you don't need any real tools to the complete the look, it's extremely easy for any beauty amateur to pull off. I mean, we mess up our cat eyes frequently enough that we could purposely make them go awry, right?

Here is a play by play on how to re-create the look using affordable products.

1. Smudge black kohl eyeliner on the bottom lash line and upper lash line.

Use the smudging tool to disperse the color around the eyes, focusing primarily on the outer edges.

2. Apply a primer to your eyelids.

While you want everything to to look a bit messy, you want your face to remain fresh. Falling eyeshadow glitter is the easiest way to ruin that.

3. Dab a glittery shadow over the eyelids.

Using your ringer finger, lightly tap on a dark metallic eyeshadow on the center of each eyelid, then use the same finger to blend the color a bit outwards so it doesn't look too polished.

4. Apply a clear balm over the eyeshadow.

Vaseline Original, $6, Amazon; Aquaphor Healing Ointment Tube, $12, Amazon

Using your ring finger again, dab on the smallest amount of Vaseline or Aquaphor completely over the eyelid and under the brow bone to get the appropriate amount of sheen you want.

5. Apply clumpy mascara on the top and bottom lashes.

A mascara wand with a bushy brush will work best for this.

6. Finish it off with a bright red-orange lipstick.

For a highly pigmented, matte color, apply a liquid lipstick using (surprise) your ring finger to lightly spread it on each lip. It will come off softer and less clean than it would using the wand.

This makeup + these clothes = your perfect Saturday night combo. I'll drink to that.
