The Evolution Of Leo DiCaprio's Scruff

by Kali Borovic

All good things must come to an end, and, well, Leonardo DiCaprio has finally shaved his beard and cut his hair. Believe me, he looks like an entirely new man. Maybe he did it because the man-bun trend is dying (which it isn't, if Peter Dinklage has anything to say about it), or maybe he was just tired of the upkeep. Either way, DiCaprio's man-scruff evolution proves that there's a good possibility the beard will be back.

While lots of men out there are preparing their scruff for fall (no-shave November, anyone?), DiCaprio shocked facial hair fans everywhere by getting rid of the beard and long hair he's been rocking for awhile. This could just be the end of the man-bun as we know it. OK, so maybe that's a bit extreme, but both Leo and Leto have stopped wearing the look of late.

You either love or hate the man-bun; there's no in-between. No matter which side you're on when it comes to long hair, there's no denying that DiCaprio looks awesome with his closely cropped scruff and side-parted locks.

It makes no sense to me that he would stick with that giant beard through the hottest days of summer and then shave it as soon as the weather gets colder. Perhaps he only had it for his character in the upcoming movie The Reverent ? No matter the reasoning, his facial hair evolution tells me that it might be coming back sooner than we all think.

You see, no matter what DiCaprio does with his hair for a role, he always comes back to the scruff.

DiCaprio was just starting off with a clean slate and a smooth face.

A few years later, he was still finding himself as an actor. The white tips are very "boy band," but the barely-there chin scruff implies that he's on his way to bigger and better hair.

He showed us all that the man-bun was cool before it was a trend.

There's that signature side-swoop.

Finally, the mustache started to emerge. It looks a little creepy, but it's all about baby steps.

Years passed, and he remained stuck in the pre-scruff stages.

There it is! A Full-fledged beard.

Poor DiCaprio took a backslide in 2008. Perhaps he was nervous about committing to such a distinct look?

He ultimately ended up keeping it consistent with his light scruff.

Then came 2012, when his roles in The Wolf Of Wall Street and The Great Gatsby called for a clean-shaven look.

Aaand he's back — with a pageboy cap!

BAM! Look at that beard! Lovely, isn't it? This was his breakout scruff, and it did not disappoint.

He kept it scruffy throughout the first half of the year, looking dapper and fitting in with the man-bun trend.

Although most of his facial hair is gone, I should have seen it coming. DiCaprio will always go back to his staple look.
