What Is The Most Popular Food On Instagram?

As ubiquitous as selfies may have become in the past few years, Instagram has never forgotten its own humble roots in food porn. But what is the most popular food on Instagram? Part of food porn's appeal is the diversity of options out there — for instance, I'm such a lazy cook that I have no hope of ever making anything beyond spaghetti and stir fry, which is why I spend way too much time staring at photos of fancy food I'll never learn to create. It's almost as good as eating it, and I don't have to worry about giving myself diabetes.

According to Vice, though, the most photographed food on Instagram isn't fancy at all. In fact, it's perhaps the most plebeian food of our time: Pizza. Admittedly, it's not the most scientific study; as Cosmopolitan points out, it was conducted by an Italian chef and a public relations firm, which isn't exactly the setup for unbiased research. However, their claim that #pizza made up 17 million of the 300 million Instagram posts analyzed in the study is entirely plausible — pizza is, after all, indisputably the greatest food of all time. In fact, some claim that it's literally addictive, which explains so much about our 2 a.m. Pizza Hut cravings. Even rats just can't resist its magnificently cheesy appeal.

Weirdly enough, though, Italy isn't actually the most popular place to upload pizza Instagrams. That honor goes to the good ol' United States, where New Yorkers upload six percent of all pizza Instagrams. What can I say? Americans love their pizza.
