What Is Twitter Saying About John Boehner?

by Emma Cueto

In case you hadn't already felt the shock wave rippling through the country, House Speaker John Boehner is resigning at the end of October. And naturally his sudden departure has left a lot of people surprised, to say the least. I guess this is the fun thing about democracy; your leaders keep changing all the time, even the times you least expect. So, how is Twitter reacting to John Boehner's resignation? With a lot of divided opinions. This is perhaps unsurprising, but it still gives us some interesting insight into the current political climate of the nation.

Boehner has served in Congress since 1991 and served as Speaker since 2011. Before that he acted as House Minority Leader. His departure was unexpected, and everyone is talking about it — and people have a whole host of different opinions and reactions, as a quick glance at Twitter will reveal.

Boehner has never walked an easy line as Speaker. As a moderate in his party, many Republicans didn't like his approach or his agenda. Being pressed between Democrats and far-right conservatives never left Boehner a lot of room to maneuver, but he kept trying anyway. Reactions to his departure range from delight to sympathy to fear of who will replace him — and of course, a few jokes about him being orange. One highlight of democracy: The jokes about elected leaders never cease.

So, what exactly are people saying? Well, here are a few tweets that can give you idea.
