These Songs Are Like Sweaters For Your Ears

by Jennifer Still

It's here! It's finally here! By "it", of course, I mean fall, the best season ever in the history of the world. Sure, there are only four seasons to choose from, but still! Fall is when the weather lifts from being oppressively hot and melting you with sweat the moment you leave the house (even when you just took a shower) and becomes pleasantly chilly, especially in the evenings. You can put on your favorite hoodie, curl up under a blanket, switch to hot beverages (though I'm an iced coffee year 'round girl, myself), and just relax and watch the leaves change color. Oh, and you can listen to music that makes you feel as warm and fuzzy as your favorite sweater, and that's always a good thing.

If you're obsessed with music and consider it more than a casual pastime, then you'll know what I mean when I say that certain songs just have the power to make you feel some kinda way. In the fall, I always find myself gravitating towards songs that are the musical equivalent of cuddles with someone you like a whole lot. They're comforting, they're cozy, and they keep you warm at night. Basically, they're the best.

If you've been looking for those kind of songs and haven't been able to find them, you're in luck — I've got nine for you right here. Sit back, press play, and enjoy.

Duke Dumont, "Ocean Drive"

I've been a Duke Dumont fan for a while now, but their latest single, "Ocean Drive", is something really special. It's got that '80s vibe and is almost summery but just perfect for that crisp changeover into fall. I love it so much!

Feder featuring Lyse, "Goodbye"

"Goodbye" is a really weird song that, to be honest, I wasn't even sure I liked at first. But when I listened to it again, I found myself mesmerized and really into it. There's mood and ambiance to spare, but it's also intriguing and sexy in a wonderfully cold-weather way, if that makes sense.

Florence + The Machine, "Long and Lost"

Everything Florence does is larger-than-life and all-encompassing in ways that I don't even have words for, but "Long and Lost", from her latest album, has a little edge when it comes to this list because it's sparse and lonely and yet so full at the same time.

JoJo, "Save My Soul"

I don't know what it is about "Save My Soul", one of the three songs from JoJo's recently released "tringle", that pulls me in, but it does. I don't even know why it feels so perfect for fall, but hopefully you'll get it when you listen to it, too.

The Masks, "Say How You Feel 2V15"

I don't remember where I first heard The Masks — I'm pretty sure it was on BBC's Radio 1Xtra, but I'm not sure — but I'm so grateful I did. This song is so smooth and warm that I literally feel like I'm in a whole other world when I listen to it. I'm sure it'll be come one of your favorites, too.

FKA Twigs, "In Time"

Twigs is another artist that makes music that's perfect for the colder weather, but "In Time"... man oh man. It's that intro that gets me, and then the chorus, and... okay, it's the whole thing.

The Weeknd, "Earned It"

I'm vaguely embarrassed that a song from the Fifty Shades of Grey soundtrack is on this list, but I'm not embarrassed about good music, and "Earned It" totally qualifies. This generally appears on most people's sex playlists (and it's good for that, too), but blasting it through the headphones as you're walking home on a cool autumn night works perfectly, too.

James Bay, "Scars"

James Bay's name might as well be Mr. Autumn, because his voice is just perfect for the season and there's no other way to put it. "Scars" feels so emotional and intense in the best possible way and I'll be listening to it all fall long.

Raye, "Alien"

Admittedly, I haven't listened to much else of Raye's besides "Alien", but I don't think that matters because this song is so enough (no offense, Raye). It's another one of those smooth, sultry tracks that makes you wanna snuggle in with someone cute. You're welcome.
