Do You Need A Fancy Makeup Brush Cleaner?

by Melanie Richtman

Everyone knows that you need to clean your makeup brushes regularly to keep them in tip-top condition and avoid bacteria growth, but what is truly the best method for cleaning your makeup brushes? There are plenty of tips, tricks and tools out there to help you get the job done, including some fancy contraptions that are supposed to make cleaning your brushes way more efficient and effective, but do you really need anything special to clean your makeup brushes?

The issue that I always get into when I attempt to clean my makeup brushes (which I probably don't do as often as I should), is that I wet the brushes and use hand soap like they say you're supposed to do, but then I struggle to really get the middle of the brushes clean. I feel like I'm constantly just scrubbing the outside of the makeup brush, never really getting to the core, so how is that effective? It's not.

Luckily, I have found a way to combat this problem. Sigma Beauty makes this fancy brush cleaning tool called the "Sigma Spa Express Brush Cleaning Mat" that has seven different textures to, for lack of a better term, brush your makeup brushes on while you wash them so you can get a deep clean. The mat has suction cups on the bottom to keep it in place in your sink. Talk about convenient!

Sigma currently has a large version of the brush cleaning mat and a glove version available on its website now, but they are also launching a smaller version on Oct. 5 for $25. It's a little pricey, but totally worth it. And the small size is convenient for those of you with small sinks, like me.

At the end of the day, this tool definitely comes in handy if you struggle to clean your makeup brushes efficiently, and having the bright pink mat in your sink or on your bathroom counter is a great reminder to actually clean your makeup brushes regularly. Do I think you need a fancy mat to help you keep your brushes clean? Probably not. But if you struggle with remembering to do it, or feel you'd like something next-level to help you get the deepest clean possible, a tool like this could be perfect.

If you are cleaning your makeup brushes at all, you're probably doing better than most!
