UCC Is The 45th School Shooting This Year

by Kaitlyn Wylde

At least 10 people are dead, including the gunman, and another 7 injured after a mass shooting at Umpqua Community College in Roseburg, Ore., Thursday. This marks the 45th school shooting this year. Yes, that's right: 45 instances in which a firearm was discharged in a school, in less than one calendar year. The locations range from pre-K schools to colleges, many of them include the injury and/or death of victims, and some of them include the suicide or attempted suicide of the shooter. While the aftermaths of the incidents vary, one thing they all do have in common is gun violence. In a time in which the conversations surrounding gun control are so heated, and yet at such a stagnant impasse, one cannot help but be deeply saddened by the harrowing statistics on gun violence in schools — particularly in light of today's shootings at UCC.

(Update: The shooter was confirmed dead by Douglas County Sheriff John Hanlin Thursday afternoon. Hanlin could confirm 10 fatalities and seven injuries. The shooter was identified by the New York Times as Chris Harper Mercer, 26, on Thursday night. Update: The victims' names were released Friday night: Lucero Alcaraz, 19; Treven Taylor Anspach, 20; Rebecka Ann Carnes, 18; Quinn Glen Cooper, 18;Kim Saltmarsh Dietz, 59; Lucas Eibel, 18; Jason Dale Johnson, 33;Lawrence Levine, 67 (assistant professor); Sarena Dawn Moore, 44.)
