Tragic Shooting of Two Young Boys Takes Place in Ohio

by Lane Florsheim

Devastating news from Ohio: The AP reports that preliminary autopsy results show a 12-year-old boy shot his 9-year-old half brother, and then shot himself at their grandparents' home in Jackson, Ohio on Wednesday.

Whether or not the first shooting of 9-year-old Blake Campbell by 12-year-old Austin Wiseman was an accident remains unclear. Jackson County coroner Dr. Gregory Hawker told media outlets that each boy suffered a gunshot wound to the head. Authorities said the grandparents were not home at the time of the deaths, and that a .44-caliber handgun was recovered.

Shirley Causey, whose grandson was a cousin and friend of Austin, said he was "very protective" of his younger half-brother. She described him as being so polite that he wouldn't get a drink or snack without asking her permission when he visited.

Hawker said that although there was no suspicion of anyone else being involved, any shooting must be treated as a potential homicide until investigation rules that possibility out.

Police Chief Carl Eisnaugle said in a statement that the community was deeply saddened, "and our sympathies go out to all those who have been affected."
