As most people know, October is Breast Cancer Awareness month which means that everything within a mile radius is going to have a pink ribbon on it. Race for Cures have happened nationwide, and now, fashion and beauty retailers are supporting Breast Cancer Awareness through their products and services. While tons of businesses have been showing support for the disease in the past, the list of awesome brands and services continues to grow each and every year.
Over the few years, Breast Cancer Awareness month and the pink-hued items it inspires has undergone criticism for "pinkwashing" the disease. Many products that purport to support breast cancer charity do not disclose the amount of money actually donated to the charity they are meant to support. Other campaigns have been lambasted for sexualizing breast cancer, like social media calls to go without a bra for a day to raise awareness. While these myriad of issues should be closely observed, there are other incredible campaigns and retailers who are making an impact for research and early detection efforts.
Genderless underwear company PLAY OUT featured double mastectomy survivors in their campaign earlier this year to showcase an often marginalized group of breast cancer survivors. Every year the CFDA creates a t-shirt in support of Fashion Targets Breast Cancer, and all proceeds from those shirts go toward the Fashion Targets Breast Cancer fund.
This year, the product list has grown even longer. Do your part in supporting in the fight against breast cancer with a little bit of retail therapy. Shopping has never felt so good.
