Is The Apple Ring Coming Soon?

by Marc Cuenco

The Apple family just keeps on growing. In an effort to maintain it's place at the top of the luxury tech device world, Apple filed a smart ring patent last week and that could mean that an Apple iRing might be coming soon. And just like that, the Apple Watch just went from totally revolutionary to sounding seriously dated. So, what will Apple's "ring computing device" actually do? According to Apple's patent application:

A user controls an external electronic device with a finger-ring-mounted touchscreen that includes a computer processor, wireless transceiver, and rechargeable power source; the ring is worn on a first finger receives an input from a second finger, selects one of a plurality of touch events associated with the input, and wirelessly transmits a command associated with the touch event to the external electronic device.

Before you run out and pre-order a smart ring from Apple, it's important to know that just because they filed a patent, it does not mean the tech giant is producing these guys in time for the company's next keynote presentation. Whether it's Apple who will release the next wave of wearable technology first or not, the news still plants the seed in many techies minds that a smart ring isn't too far off. Here a couple of sketches of the supposed Apple ring:

Getting one of these will truly make for one unique engagement ring.

Of course, you don't have to wait for Apple to release one because there are smart rings and jewelry on the market that are available now:
