Carly Rae Jepsen's Cinderella Could Be A Feminist

It seems that the trend of pop stars taking to the stage is one that will continue growing, as Carly Rae Jepson is now set to play Cinderella on Broadway, right on the heels of Carrie Underwood's role in The Sound of Music. It makes total sense for Jepsen, who has made her name thus far on tween-styled pop and a frightening amount of enthusiasm for sparkly shirts and exclamation points to play a Disney princess. However, given that Carly Rae's claim to fame is "Call Me Maybe," a rather empowered song about a girl taking charge of a romantic situation, it will be interesting to see what she brings to the role of Cinderella, a character whose story is not particularly rife with girl power or "go-getter" attitude.

After all, there's not much room in the Cinderella story for "call me maybes" — Cinderella is a wimpy lame-o who relies on her stepmom until some fairy takes pity on her, gives her a nice dress and a makeover, then sends her off to a ball so that she can have one night away from the terrible drudgery of a life she makes no attempt to escape from. Then, she is rescued from lower-class toil by a man in shining armor who clearly has trouble with women or a hardcore foot fetish — otherwise he'd never have bothered to try and shove her shoe on the foot of every woman in town — and yay, all is well because all you need to have a nice life is a rich man who will save you from yourself.

But could we make room in "Cinderella" for Carly Rae Jepsen's attitude toward romance? Could Cinderella join the ranks of more headstrong, bad ass Disney leading ladies and say to the prince, I'm not just leaving my shoe, I'm leaving my number? If someone told me that "Call Me Maybe" was being worked into the Cinderella story, perhaps we'd have more hope for one of Disney's most popular princesses.

Here's how I think it might go, were we to slip a little more Carley Rae into Cinderella's fateful meeting with the prince. Cue up the "Call Me Maybe" tune in your head, and start reading:

I had a wish for a prince

Never thought it'd end up like this

Fairy godmother's the best

And now I feel so blessed

I hate washing the floor

Being poor is a chore

I wanted out of that sitch

And now here you are

Your jewels were glowing

Jodhpurs, hair was flowing

This beats doing sewing

Where ya think you're going baby?

Hey I just met you,

and this is crazy,

but let's forget the shoe thing

And call on me maybe

You're cute and I am single

Our genes would look good mingled

let's forget the shoe thing,

and call on me maybe

Hey I just met you,

and this is crazy,

but let's forget the shoe thing

And call on me maybe

Princes are one in a milli

and maybe this is silly

but forget the shoe thing

and call on me maybe

I look so hot in this dress

This night's a total success

if you'll really confess

that you want to be my babe

Your jewels were glowing

Jodhpurs, hair was flowing

This beats doing sewing

Where ya think you're going baby?

Hey I just met you,

and this is crazy,

but let's forget the shoe thing

And call on me maybe
