How To Dye Your Hair For Halloween

by Jessica Willingham

Halloween is here, and chances are you need terrifying (or totally gorgeous) tresses to accompany your costume. You can — and should — bypass the cheap wigs at the store and opt for some beautiful temporary options because they're easier than you think. Here's how to temporarily dye your hair for Halloween.

Step one: Make sure your locks are already feeling luscious. Keep your locks hydrated and well taken care up leading up to your Halloween transformation by utilizing a leave-in conditioner. Whatever temporary option you choose, chances are it will be more product and change than your hair is used to. Prep those locks well!

Step two: Choose the temporary hair solution that's right for you. Maybe last year's Elsa wig was so itchy you barely wore it, or your inexpensive hair chalk dried out your hair. Whatever the case, know there are tons of options for a quick, temporary hair change that you can choose from. Extensions, hair chalk, hair mascara (yes, that is definitely a thing), dyed hairspray, wigs, and old school temporary dye are all options this Halloween, and products have never been more available or such high quality.

Below are some of my favorite products for giving your look a 180 degree switch, quickly and safely.

1. SPLAT Hair Chalk

This hair chalk comes in tons of colors and is really affordable. This is a great option if you have all the hair you need, but just want a touch of color.

2. Bumble and Bumble Spray Chalk

These come in lighter, less pigmented colors which may be a great option if you're looking for color you can wash out the next morning.

3. L'Oreal Professional Hairchalk Color Polish

These come in natural colors, if you're a brunette that needs to have Kardashian-level black hair by tomorrow night.

4. Manic Panic Semi-Permenant Hair Color

This creamy, semi-permanent dye is paraben and sulfate free, so your hair will still be feeling good after application.

5. POP Human Hair Color Strips Extensions

Looking to nail a Kylie Jenner costume? These clip-in blue extensions will be a life (and hair) saver.

POP Human Hair Color Strips Extensions, $10, ulta

6. Eyeshadow

Sounds a little crazy, but trust: If you're in a bind and have no hair chalk, extensions, or wigs handy, you can temporarily dye your hair with eyeshadow. It will last a few hours if you set it with heat and hairspray.
