A Wendy Davis-Inspired Dramedy Is In The Works

by Kaitlin Reilly

If you were inspired by former Texas senator Wendy Davis' headline-making filibuster in 2013, then you may be surprised by how her story may also be able to make you laugh — at least, when it's a show on NBC. As Deadline reported on Thursday, Davis' story is currently in development as a dramedy at NBC. The series, which will come from writer Jennifer Cecil, is about a Democratic Senator who loses the race for Governor of Texas and ends up using the struggle to "unshackle her inner badass," reports Deadline. "Badass" is certainly the right word to describe Davis: she held a 13-hour long filibuster to derail the Senate's plan to ban abortions after 20 weeks of pregnancy and shut down 37 of the state's 42 abortion clinics. During that filibuster, Davis was not allowed to sit down or even lean on a desk, and had to continue to speak (on topic!) for the entire duration. This is the kind of women we want written about on TV.

Obviously, a badass like Davis deserves an awesome actress to portray her, and one that can handle the bizarrely funny situations of Davis' life. (Let's be honest: as the filibuster proved, our legal system can be pretty ridiculous.) Here are the ladies that would make an excellent Davis and should totally be shortlisted for the part:

1. Amy Poehler

Poehler played the peppy, ambitious Leslie Knope on Parks and Recreation, and maybe it's time that this NBC darling take her government work to the state level.

2. Tina Fey

Obviously, Fey makes it to the top of any list — but her role as a not-quite-so-competent lawyer on The Unbreakable Kimmy Schimdt was a reminder that we desperately need her back on TV — full-time, please.

3. Amy Schumer

Schumer is riding high this year with her sketch comedy show Inside Amy Schumer and her feature Trainwreck, but one thing she hasn't tried yet is a scripted TV series where she's not playing herself. She's a little young for the role, but I'm sure she could make it work. She's an out and proud feminist, after all, and we definitely need more ladies like her on TV.

4. Kristen Wiig

The Saturday Night Live alum made us all feel for her characters in Girl Most Likely and The Skeleton Twins— she's more than proved she's able to balance humor with far more serious material.

5. June Diane Raphael

You know her face, but you might now know her name — yet. Raphael has a supporting role on Netflix's Grace and Frankie and has appeared on shows like New Girl and The League, but it's about time she gets a starring role.

6. Maria Bamford

Bamford has voiced plenty of your favorite cartoons over the years (she voiced Shreik on CatDog!) and currently has her own TV show Lady Dynamite in pre-production. She's a busy woman, but her brand of offbeat humor would be perfect for the Davis based dramedy.

7. Nikki Glaser

Glaser was a finalist on The Last Comic Standing when she was only 20 years old, and a decade later, she's still killing it. She had a short-lived series on Comedy Central with fellow comedian Sara Schaefer, Nikki & Sara Live, and teamed up with Schumer for a role in Trainwreck, but definitely deserves a starring role. Could the character inspired by Davis be it?

Any of these comedians will have big shoes to fill for a role in the Davis-based dramedy, but luckily, these ladies are pretty awesome in their own right.
