T.I.'s Apology For Being Sexist Is Super Ironic

by Nicole Pomarico

Let's get one thing straight: I love T.I. as much as the next person. Who hasn't rapped along with him to "Live Your Life" while driving with the windows down? But now, I'm not so sure we can be friends anymore. In a radio interview this week, T.I. admitted he refuses to vote for a woman for president, including Hillary Clinton. And not because he has a different candidate in mind who he thinks is better for prepared for the job. Nope, T.I. just doesn't think women are cut out for the job — and he has plenty of reasons for why he thinks that way.

Of course, none of his reasons are good, but they're still reasons. For example, he thinks women make decisions rashly and emotionally and often try to take back things they've done in the heat of passion later on when they come to their senses. Women, always deciding to go to war when they're on their periods, am I right? Except as it turns out, the rapper is guilty of exactly that. Now that T.I. has apologized for his sexist comments on Twitter, he ironically revealed that he tends to do the same thing himself.

In case you're not up to speed on what happened, here's what the 35-year-old said initially when asked if he'd elect a lady into office:

Not to be sexist but, I can’t vote for the leader of the free world to be a woman. Just because, every other position that exists, I think a woman could do well. But, the president? It’s kinda like, I just know that women make rash decisions emotionally – they make very permanent, cemented decisions – and then later, it’s kind of like it didn’t happen, or they didn’t mean for it to happen. And I sure would hate to just set off a nuke ... [Other leaders] will not be able to negotiate the right kinds of foreign policy; the world ain’t ready yet. I think you might be able to get the Lochness Monster elected before [a woman]. It’s not right, but I’m just saying.

Oh, T.I. There are so many things wrong with what you just said that I can't even begin to point them all out. First of all, the Lochness Monster is from Scotland, so she (he?) isn't even qualified to run for president in this country. And second of all, as a woman, I, too, "sure would hate to just set off a nuke," so I think we can all agree on that one regardless of sex.

And out of everything T.I. said, I'd like to focus on this sentence in particular: "I just know that women make rash decisions emotionally ... and then later, it's kind of like it didn't happen, or they didn't mean for it to happen."

Got it? Good. Keep it in your mind as you read T.I.'s Twitter apology:

Wait, T.I. Are you saying that you may have made a rash decision emotionally in saying that a woman could never make a good president, and now you're apologizing because you didn't mean for it to happen? So wait, women aren't the only ones capable of doing this? Oh. Interesting.

In a time when everything celebrities do and say gets dissected within an inch of its being, it's surprising that people still actually say things like this in public. But they do, and I'm so thankful for T.I.'s apology — mostly because in issuing it, he exposed the truth that men aren't immune to acting without thinking first, either. It's human trait, and often, how emotional someone is can actually turn out to be a strength.

Bottom line, T.I. and everyone else who's out there listening: Select your favorite candidate based on their experience, their beliefs, and what they want to do for our country, not on a generalization you've made because he or she is a man or a woman. It's the only way to get the right person into office.
