Snoop Dogg Is A Memorable BET Hip Hop Awards Host

by Keertana Sastry

Who knew that one of the funniest awards hosts of the year would actually be the rapper extraordinaire Snoop Dogg, aka Uncle Snoop? At Tuesday night's telecast of the 2015 BET Hip Hop Awards, host Snoop Dogg performed in pre-recorded sketches, made great jokes, and was generally silly, all while keeping up the attitude and ease that make Snoop so damn cool. I never thought I'd be saying this, but I actually would love to see Snoop go on to host even more awards shows. Just think about how cool it would be to see Snoop host the MTV Video Music Awards. And why does LL Cool J always have to host the Grammy Awards? Perhaps Uncle Snoop should take a turn, or at least co-host next year?

The proof is in the pudding, and Snoop really did have a memorable performance as host of the BET Hip Hop Awards. The rapper started off his hosting duties as a makeshift DJ after Future performed "Where Ya At" to begin the awards telecast, playing songs from Future, Drake, and more. But what was really impressive was just how funny Snoop Dogg was as the awards show progressed, especially when he decided to take on sketch duties and also host a majority of the show from a desk in the style of an anchor desk for a news show.

The first and best sketch Snoop Dogg performed began after talking about how to profit off Straight Outta Compton. Luckily for us, it turns out he has quite possibly the best (fake) idea ever: By turning the incredible film which shows the realities of the rap group N.W.A.'s early lives into a ride for tourists. The Straight Outta Compton ride starts with a "Welcome To Compton" sign, but Snoop warns riders not to stop for selfies. Then tourists get the chance to get mugged when hired actors steal the fake possessions that were given to them at the start of the ride. It was all clearly a parody about how while many filmgoers may have enjoyed Straight Outta Compton and appreciated its message, they couldn't fully understand the very real struggle it portrayed. Watch the sketch below.

From there, Uncle Snoop pulled out all the stops for another sketch. In this one, Snoop talked about how he was on another show for BET, when the camera cut to an intervention-style show. When it seemed as though the focus would be Snoop's penchant for smoking weed ("I have glaucoma!" he exclaimed), the camera instead cut to his shoes, as it became clear he was riding a hoverboard in the house. Yes, he had a hoverboard intervention.

While these may not be the best sketches in awards show history, they were certainly enjoyable and did a good job of breaking up the BET Hip Hop Awards. Plus, who knew Snoop Dogg was so funny? Let's just hope more awards shows take notice.
