'HIMYM' To Rip Off Finale Of This Show

If you're one of the many How I Met Your Mother fans impatiently trying to piece together exactly what will go down when the series finale airs this March, here's a good hint for you: According to the show's co-creator, the How I Met Your Mother series finale is at least partly inspired by...wait for it...the Cheers series finale from 1993.

"Watched the #Cheers series finale again for inspiration; cried as hard as I did in 1993," How I Met Your Mother co-creator Craig Thomas posted on Twitter yesterday. "A reminder why we do what we do. #HIMYM."

This is interesting and confusing, considering that How I Met Your Mother is a show that's always been based on the concept of the protagonist, Ted, receiving a happy ending with the faceless "mother" of the series (now portrayed by Cristin Milioti). In the Cheers series finale, the couple that the audience has rooted for all along, Sam and Diane, don't actually end up together — Sam heads off to Boston to remain with Cheers, and Diane heads off to Los Angeles in the end.

Could this possibly mean that Ted and the mother are no longer together in the future? Does it mean that the break-up of another HIMYM couple (Lily and Marshall, Robin and Barney) is imminent? It's not clear, but at least we've all got another three months to speculate exactly what this means.

The series finale of How I Met Your Mother will air on CBS on March 31.
