How To Dress As A Nerd For Halloween

by Kat Kuehl

Honestly, I've never been one to put a ton of work into my Halloween costume. Typically, the simpler the better as far as I'm concerned. Luckily, these nerd Halloween costume ideas are all exceptionally easy. And, you might be surprised to see that you already have tons of these items in your closet.

First things first, I should clarify that I don't think there is anything wrong with being a nerd. In fact, I'm one of those people who believes nerds run the world. But, much like a football player, a cheerleader, a hippie, or a rockstar, it is something that makes for an easy and recognizable Halloween costume.

Of course, there's more than just one type of nerd. So, I've pulled together a few varying looks for different types and interests. There's the sci-fi nerd who loves Star Trek, Star Wars, and anything else related to fiction and fantasy. The academic nerd is your classically studious and book smart genius. And, for the gamer nerd, think Pokemon, Dungeons and Dragons, and Magic the Gathering.

So, here are a few different looks to inspire the perfect nerdy costume for Halloween. Push up those glasses, hike up those pants, and get ready for one geeky party.

1. The Sci-Fi Nerd

What You Need: Of course, the essential piece of this costume is a graphic tee with Star Wars or Star Trek designs printed on it ($12.99, JCPenney). Then, tuck your shirt into a pair of high waisted jeans, which you need to cuff at the ankle to show off your amazing sci-fi shoes ($54, Office.co.uk). Top the whole look off with a set of completely unnecessary suspenders ($9.75, Target), and a pair of thick-rimmed glasses ($9.99, ZeroUV).

2. The Academic Nerd

What You Need: Think of this as the classic nerd look. Start with some high waisted plaid pants ($22, luxurydivas.com), and add a white button down ($39.95, LL Bean) with a completely clashing sweater vest. Some loafers, a bow tie, and a pair of nerdy glasses ($15, Amazon) are the perfect accessories. For an extra touch, carry around an encyclopedia or dictionary.

3. The Gamer Nerd

What You Need: Start this look with a Pokemon or other game-related t-shirt ($20, Etsy). And, of course, you need to tuck that t-shirt into some faded jeans. Add some Converse, suspenders ($15, Amazon), a wristband ($6.50, Hot Topic), and — of course — glasses. Then, tote around a Gameboy or other vintage gaming system to complete the entire look.
