11 Actually Funny Last-Minute Halloween Costumes

by Emily Kelley

So, you’ve left your Halloween costume to the last minute, huh? But you still have to wear something, and it might as well make people smile. Any of these funny last-minute Halloween costume ideas are bound to get lots of likes and laughs.

Not every costume has to be cute or sexy. Obviously, we all like to look our best, but sometimes making other people laugh and being able to laugh at ourselves is the best look to have. I love a good creative costume — even if the outfit or idea seems rather simple — and I’m sure all your friends, family, and fellow bar patrons will love it to. In my experience, the key to pulling off a funny costume is to really just own it. Does the character pull a bunch of faces? Make all the faces you want, girl. Does your costume make fun of all the unnecessarily sexy costumes out there? Work it like you’re rocking the runway. Halloween is about fun, after all!

For the most part, the elements of these ideas are probably already in your closet, or easily obtained from Amazon or the mall. But don’t wait until the very, very last minute — give yourself at least a little time to be creative!

1. A Night In

Not everyone enjoys going out, but I’m sure their friends will drag those people out on Halloween. You can still protest and pine for your night in by dressing for the occasion in hilarious fashion.

Blue Throw Blanket, $40, Crate&Barrel | Halloween Sweatshirt, $26, Etsy | Slipper Boot, $39, Accessorize

Don your favorite snuggly blanket over comfy sweats and (perhaps a Halloween-themed?) sweatshirt, as well as some warm slippers. You can also munch on your favorite night-in snack or just carry around an empty bag if you’re headed out to the bars.

2. Darla from Finding Nemo

Oh god, remember how scared you were for Nemo when Darla burst into that dentist office? She’s not a kid who should have pets, but you can still dress up as her if you promise not to buy any fish.

Purple Pull Over, $11, Universal Textiles | White Frilly Socks, $8, River Island | Stuffed Nemo, $14, Hot Topic

For Darla, you’ll need to tap into your inner second grader. She wears a purple pull-over, a white button-down, a plaid skirt, along with some frilly socks and pigtails. You can use jewelry wire to make the fake headgear. Put Nemo in a plastic bag, and you’re good to go!

3. Sexy Sheet Ghost

Since it seems like most Halloween costumes have the word “sexy” in front of them, let’s put a sexy spin on a distinctly unsexy costume — which is why it’s funny!

White Sheets, $17, Amazon | Sexy Wig, $11, Amazon | Sharpies, $7, Amazon

First, think about the standard sheet ghost costume so many of us probably wore as kids at least once. Get a cheap sheetyou won’t be using as bedding again, and cut holes where your eyes will be. Then just slip on your cutest bikini or lingerie over the sheet! Obviously, you should have some clothes underneath, too. You can even bump it up a notch with a sexy wig and Sharpie makeup!

4. Grumpy Cat

Cat Ears, $6, Amazon

The key to a great grump cat costume is the makeup. You can pretty much wear a pair of cat ears and some basics — all black is a good choice — as long as you nail the makeup. And despite being grumpy, you can’t help but giggle at that adorable face!

There are a few good makeup tutorials for ol’ grumps on YouTube, but I think this one from VFX Makeup is the closest you’re going to look to the actual kitty.

5. Dancing Pumpkin Man

Hopefully you’ve already been witness to the glory that is dancing pumpkin man. I mean, those moves… that enthusiasm… how could you not want to emulate that for Halloween?

Black Unitard, $34, Amazon | Black Long Sleeve Shirt, $9, Amazon | Black Leggings, $12, Amazon

The costume is pretty simple — you can use either a unitard, or a black long-sleeve shirt and leggings. Then, all you’ll need is a pumpkin mask (why do they make them look so scary?), and some good dancing shoes.

6. Ace Ventura

Everyone’s favorite goofy pet detective! Ace Ventura has a lot of good looks, but I think his iconic pink tutu look is the funniest to do on Halloween.

Pink Tutu, $10, Amazon | Garnier Fructis Super Stiff Hair Gel, $7, Over Stock

Obviously, you’ll need that tutu, as well as a short sleeve button-up, some patterned shorts, boots, and lots of hair gel. And don’t worry if you don’t have short hair — you can fake the look with pigtails.

7. A Sim

This is probably the easiest possible costume you could make last minute. Since Sims from the Sims video games just look like normal people, all you have to do is wear your normal clothes, and construct a little Sim plumbob for yourself.

You’ll need a few easy craft supplies like cardboard, glue, and glitter, and then you just attach your creation to a headband — ta da, you’re a Sim!

8. Crazy Cat Lady

Look — I love my cats like they were my children, and if that makes me a crazy person, then so be it. I’m a crazy person with cats, so joke’s on you.

Lavender Bathrobe, $15, Amazon | Sweat Pants, $35, H&M | Kitty Mug, $13, Amazon

But if you want to go the stereotypical crazy cat lady route, just deck yourself out in a bathrobe, an adorable cat shirt, cat slippers, sweats, and carry around some plush cats and a kitty mug. You could also attach the cats to the robe if you don’t want to lug them around.

9. Tina Belcher from Bob’s Burgers

The oldest Belcher sibling from Bob’s Burgers has quickly become a costume favorite.

Blue Shirt, $8, Amazon | Tube Socks, $10, Fishpond | Black and White HighTop Converse, $55, Converse | Notebook, $10, Kmart

Tina likes to keep her outfit simple with a blue shirt, jean skirt, tube socks, and Converse. You’ll also need her wayfarer glasses and, if you have dark hair already, just pop a yellow clip in there and call it a day. Oh don’t forget one of Tina’s prized possessions — a unicorn or a notebook full of zombie butt friend-fiction will do just fine.

10. Napoleon Dynamite

An oldie but a goodie, right? You can never go wrong with an easy, recognizable get-up on Halloween.

Aviator Eyeglasses, $8, Amazon | Slouchy Boots, $19, Amazon | "Vote for Pedro" T-Shirt, $11, Amazon | Curly Wig, $5, Amazon

Napoleon requires jeans, aviator eye glasses, slouchy boots, and, of course, a “Vote for Pedro” t-shirt. You could also get yourself a very curly wig, just in case you’re not already rocking that style.

11. 404 Error

We’ve probably all encountered a 404 error message or two in all our time on the web. This is a super last-minute costume — as it will only take you a few minutes to complete, but will leave your friends chuckling for hours.

White T-Shirt, $3, Amazon | Sharpie Marker, $3, Amazon

Simply grab a white shirt you don’t mind basically ruining, and add “404 Error Costume Not Found” with Sharpie or fabric paint. You can make it as pretty or as basic as you want — it’ll still get the point across.
