'Walking Dead' Brings A Confusing, Upsetting Twist

I can't believe I'm about to say this y'all, but I would have preferred it if Negan had showed up on AMC this Sunday. I'm completely serious. We've been dreading this moment for years now, and it looks like, finally, Glenn died on The Walking Dead. Noooooooo!! After an episode spent trying to redeem Nicholas for reasons unbeknownst to me, Nick killed himself and pulled Glenn down with him into the horde of Walkers. The last we saw of Glenn was his horrified face as he watched guts being ripped out, which I assumed were his own, but now can't be completely positive of that.

I don't want to start spinning Jon Snow-level conspiracy theories, but on Talking Dead, Chris Hardwick referred to the scene as "what appeared to be Glenn being ripped apart" — and then left him out of the CarMax Death Montage. Is there still a chance for Glenn? Was it him on the radio trying to get through to Rick just as he as being attacked? There was somebody there trying to talk, and it could have been Glenn calling for help, or a walker bumping into the "talk" button, and therefore not devastating. Did Nicholas fall on top of him and those are actually his guts being ripped out in front of Glenn?

In order to address the speculation, Scott Gimple released the following statement that was read by Hardwick:

Dear fans of The Walking Dead, This is a hard story to tell, and when we were planning to tell it we knew our friends at Talking Dead would be talking to you about it, and knowing you’d all be talking and feeling and commiserating, I kew we should say something about it, lest our silence say something we didn’t mean to say or not say, so I’ll say this. In some way, we will see Glenn, some version of Glenn, or parts of Glenn, again, either in flashback or in the current story, to help complete the story.

Well, that covers all manner of sins, doesn't it? This is just awful. Even if the audience sees him again, it could be his dead body, but how are the others ever going to find Glenn? Did he even have any good scenes with Maggie this season? It's not enough. Nicholas was too terrible to have literally taken Glenn down with him. Glenn deserves better than that.

He's had such a hero's arc on The Walking Dead, and if that was his death, it exploited his tragic flaw of being too trusting in a way that was less satisfying and (while not Glenn's fault) kind of lame. Luckily, this is only the third episode of The Walking Dead Season 6, so if there is any hope left that Glenn is alive, we won't have to wait too long to find out.
