8 Predictions For 'Bridget Jones's Baby'

by Amy Mackelden

Since finding out that they're finally making a third Bridget Jones movie, and it's due to be released in September 2016, I have so many unanswered questions. The most important news to date is that Hugh Grant won't be in the sequel, instead being replaced by Patrick Dempsey (McDreamy himself!). Grant famously played Daniel Cleaver, Bridget Jones's sometime love interest, in the franchise, so it's inevitable to wonder who Dempsey will play. Will Dempsey be as cheeky and antagonistic as Grant was? Or has he mellowed post-Grey's Anatomy? Every update we get on Bridget Jones's Baby is like an early Christmas present as far as I'm concerned. And I can't help but make predictions based on the information that's been released so far, and from the paparazzi shots of the cast filming the movie. In the UK. Right now.

Not only will Bridget Jones be preparing for motherhood, she'll presumably also be married to Mark Darcy (Colin Firth) and navigating being the "smug married" she never thought she'd ever be. There's so much to look forward to, and, thank goodness, we won't have to endure the devastating plot of the third book, Mad About The Boy by Helen Fielding, on the big screen just yet. Here are my predictions for the third movie so far.

1. Bridget Will Drink Less

Vodka was basically a character in the first two movies. Now that she's pregnant, I think Bridget will be forced to quit alcohol, at least for a little while. Her friends have likely mellowed, too, and they probably all meet for coffee now instead of shots.

2. Bridget Will Still Love Mark Darcy In A Creepy Way

You either have the sort of relationship in which you enjoy watching someone sleep, or you don't. I predict that Bridget will still be smitten with Mark Darcy in every way, even if he snores like crazy.

3. Patrick Dempsey Will Be All McDreamy

We know that Dempsey will be playing the husband of Bridget's best friend Sharon, so it's unlikely that he will be getting romantic with Bridget. But I don't have total certainty that he won't try something shady with somebody in the cast. I mean just look at him!

4. Colin Firth Will Have Lots Of Swoon-Worthy Lines

There can't be a Bridget Jones movie without Firth's character Mark Darcy saying something devastatingly beautiful!

5. Bridget Will Deal With Marriage Issues

I don't mean that Bridget Jones will be having marital problems, though that might be the case. Being married raises a whole set of issues you didn't explore before, such as, is waxing as important once you're married? If you don't shave your legs for a day will that cause an argument? I'm guessing some of these questions will be addressed, in the same way that the women of Sex and the City discussed different attitudes to haircare and maintenance once married.

6. Calories Will Be Counted

There will be calorie counting. And pregnancy cravings.

7. Bridget Will Get Into Hijinks And Scrapes

Bridget will still have a clumsy streak, do a mad Madonna impression, and get herself into cray cray situations. And that's why we love her.

8. The Diary Will Still Be Written In

As the photo of Renée Zellweger posted on Twitter proves, Bridget is still keeping her diary. With iPad in hand, she's using new technology, but her entries will be every bit as hilarious.

There's so much to look forward to, and it's going to be a long year waiting for Bridget Jones's Baby to come out. Time to start crossing the days off of the calendar!
