The ONE Way Anyone Can Brave A Scary Movie

by Kat George

If you're anything like me, you're going to need some advice about how not to be scared during Halloween movies. 'Tis the season of the terrifying, and there's little that you can do to avoid it, save for locking yourself in your apartment and throwing your television out of the window. There's even less you can do about it if you, like me, live with someone or have someone in your love that just LO-OVES horror movies, and is intent on watching them with you at Halloween time (the rest of the year you get a free pass for your chicken-sh*t-ness).

I recently watched It Follows with my boyfriend and family, and the system I developed for avoiding the scary parts wasn't exactly efficient. I looked away from the screen while my mum narrated the events to me, my dad complained about the narration, and my boyfriend repeatedly told me to "just look". I don't even know if that qualifies as "watching", but I got through the whole movie. And I only made my boyfriend sleep on the side of the bed closest to the door for two nights, and then I went back to business as usual. Meanwhile, better advice for not being terrified during a scary movie is this, from WikiHow:

"Imagine the man holding the camera, remember the protagonist is never alone, the cameraman is always there just watching."

It's the horror movie equivalent of picturing everyone in their underwear.

So when you see this:

Remember that in reality, what is happening looks more like this:

Pretty silly, huh?

So you can make this:

Turn into this:

Or this:

As you appreciate the magic of film making.
