Katie Holmes Will Not Be Discussing Scientology

by Michelle McGahan

In the most intriguing Katie Holmes news since this morning when I discovered that Dawson's Creek is streaming on Crackle, it appeared as if Holmes was set to address Scientology for the first time in a 20/20 special with Leah Remini, set to air in full on Friday, Oct. 30. ABC News reporter Dan Harris — whose in-depth interview with Remini about her decision to leave the religion has been receiving great buzz — teased the Katie Holmes piece by telling Robin Roberts, "You're also going to hear from Katie Holmes, the former wife of Tom Cruise. [And] what she is now saying about Leah." Of course, news outlets across the Internet immediately interpreted this to mean that Holmes was going to speak out on Scientology, but this is not the case, as her rep has clarified.

(Update: The Church of Scientology has released a statement regarding Remini, which is available on its website.)

Releasing the one sentence statement that Harris was referring to, Holmes' publicist told People that the actress "regret[s] having upset Leah in the past, and wish her only the best in the future" and did not speak with 20/20 for this interview.

"In response to an email sent from the producers or fact-checkers from 20/20 asking a plethora of questions, we supplied no answers and instead gave only a one-sentence statement in response," the actress' rep told the magazine. "Katie is not making an appearance on the special, nor is she discussing Scientology, or her former marriage, and this quote was provided through her publicist."

Holmes, who joined the church during her relationship and subsequent marriage to Tom Cruise — arguably the most famous Scientologist in Hollywood — left the religion after her 2012 divorce from the actor.

During a teaser clip from the interview, Remini claims that she was "written up" by a Scientology official for once making a comment about Holmes and Cruise showing some serious PDA. "He was, like, forcibly kissing Katie,” Remini said in the interview. "I said, ‘Hey, get a friggin’ room." Bustle has reached out to the Church of Scientology for comment, but has not yet heard back.

E! points out that Holmes' statement was not in response to this particular Remini quote.

Leah Remini's 20/20 interview airs on ABC Friday at 10 PM ET.
